Science drives decisions and shareholder value drives time lines. These issues generally have harmonious outcomes. Sometimes the time line becomes the main focus. This can cause stress and confusion and create artificial time constraints on a project. Sponsors can then transfer this new time line to the vendor. Vendors that hurry to meet a deadline and are subsequently asked to delay delivery of the final product (and thus wait to get paid) are unlikely to hurry and be as cooperative the next time. Sponsors need to know what is negotiable at the vendor site and what is not. An accelerated stability protocol that is scheduled to be under test conditions for 12 weeks simply cannot be completed in less time. If the sponsor is truly in need of an expedited event, it behooves the sponsor to have established a history of integrity with the vendor in order to enlist the vendor s full cooperation and understanding then the vendor knows it truly is a real deadline and will generally do anything within reason and regulation to help the sponsor. 

Another way to leverage the scarce research and development funds is to hire a catalyst-consulting group. Several catalyst-consulting companies exist to work on a confidential basis on projects sponsored by clients with an interest in business development, market strategy analysis, technological benchmarking, and new product and process innovation.

Despite the relatively short history of LES fire modeling, the accuracy of LES technique in fire simulation has been studied extensively. Early validation of FDS predecessors was performed by comparing simulations against salt water experiments [21-23], fire plumes [24,25], and room fires [26], More recently, the FDS model has been validated for fire plumes [27] and fires in enclosures in the context of the World Trade Center investigation [28,29] and the fire model validation project sponsored by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission [30], Some of the above cases and numerous others have been collected to the Validation guide of FDS [4, Vol 3] (not yet published as a separate document). 

If this is a project sponsored by a for-profit company, the polymer chemist will need a synthetic procedure that is practical, safe, and environmentally benign, that can be scaled up for manufacturing, and that is inexpensive enough so the company can make a profit. It should come as no surprise that as the electronics industry continues to produce smaller and more sophisticated devices, the demand for new ideas and new materials remains extremely high. For one, a plastic semiconductor stable in air (Anon. CEN 2002) or a polymeric transistor (Dagani 2001) that could replace silicon would eliminate the need for complicated and relatively expensive silicon fabrication technology. 

Regulators consider the VMP to be the first fundamental commitment of the pharmaceutical organization to the validation process. In particular, the VMP must recognize that different approaches may be required to meet the differing capabilities of the various suppliers contributing to the EMS architecture. The VMP must be reviewed and approved by the project sponsor, GxP process owners, and quality assurance representative. Table 31.4 lists the typical contents of the VMP.
