Abstract Why should engineers behave ethically Often, this question is answered by qualifying engineering as a profession , and professional organizations have codes of ethics that members should comply with. In many countries however, engineering is organized differently. The present chapter explores conceptions of professionalism , inspired by evolutions in different occupational areas. A second part questions the idea that professionalism encompasses ethical responsibilities beyond ordinary morahty . Eugene Dowdle. You have not mentioned the effects of Medical Aid schemes on physician-physician and physician-patient relationships. One of the keystones of the Oslerian ethic was the sense of collegiality that bound the medical profession and provided, indirectly, a form of peer review that was of benefit to both patients and to medical practitioners. Medical Aid schemes, by their monetarising effects, have done much to damage those professional bonds. 

Many different professionals and sometimes different health care providers are involved in the care of elderly. Cooperation, documentation and communication have to be improved within the professions, between professions and with the patient. 

The aim of the Code of Practice for the Pharmaceutical Industry is to ensure that the promotion of medicines to members of the health professions and to administrative staff is carried out in a responsible, ethical and professional manner. The Code recognises and seeks to achieve a balance between the needs of patients, industry, health professionals and the general public, bearing in mind the political and social environment within which the industry operates and the statutory controls governing medicines. 

The Code applies to the promotion of medicines to members of the health professions and to appropriate administrative staff as specified in Clause 1.1. This includes promotion at meetings for UK residents held outside the UK. It also applies to promotion to UK health professionals and administrative staff at international meetings held outside the UK, except that the promotional material distributed at such meetings will need to comply with local requirements. 

The term Tiealth professional includes members of the medical, dental, pharmacy and nursing professions and any other persons who in the course of their professional activities may prescribe, supply or administer a medicine. 

Abbreviated advertisements may only appear in professional publications i.e. publications sent or delivered wholly or mainly to members of the health professions and/or appropriate administrative staff. A loose insert in such a publication cannot be an abbreviated advertisement. 

The health professions and the clinical and scientific opinions of health professionals must not be disparaged.

Contact professional organizations for any newsletters, articles, and papers they publish. Subscribe to magazines in the field. Don t forget to scan the daily newspaper for articles about firefighting and on topics that affect the profession. 

The arguments for a multiprofessional service are to offer an integrated approach by members of different professions and agencies, each bringing a range of skills. CRBPC s Rx D Code of Marketing Practice provides that member companies must not distribute service-oriented items or conduct "special promotions", which cannot be justified if subjected to scrutiny by members of the health professions and the public (CRBPC 2005). Acceptable service-oriented items are defined as items the primary goal of which is to enhance the healthcare practitioner s/patient s understanding of a condition or its treatment. When member companies provide hospitality, they must ensure that all hospitality is conducted within the limits of acceptable public and professional scrutiny, keeping in mind the need for an ethical relationship in any social interaction between healthcare professionals and pharmaceutical companies (CRBPC 2005). During such interactions, companies may provide participants with refreshments/meals that are modest in content and cost. In all instances, the provision of refreshments/meals must be clearly incidental. No other form of hospitality or entertainment is to be provided. 

Leadership is an important concept that transcends all health care professions. The acceptance of this role by all health care professionals is vital to the invention of new technologies and dosage forms, changes in the delivery of health care, enhancement of patient outcomes and quality of life, and success of their specific health care organization. The opportunities for pharmacists to be leaders in their practice setting, the pharmacy profession, and the community are plentiful. Leadership is a critical component for positive change within pharmacy organizations and the profession. 

Pharmacists and pharmacy students have unlimited opportunities to become leaders within their individual practice settings pharmacy professional organizations on the local, state, and national levels the overall health care profession and their communities.
