N early all authors who write about some aspect of chemical market research begin with a definition of these terms. Unfortunately, these definitions vary not only in the particular words which are used, but they are frequently found on close examination to be basically different in meaning. It is not my purpose here to add another set of words or to sit in judgment on previous definitions. I am more concerned today with what market research can be in the future than what it has been in the past. The inability of professional experts to agree on the limits and purposes of the function is to me but a reflection of its newness in the corporate organization. 

Once a chemical or waste stream has become unsafe due to dehydration, solvent evaporation, or the formation of hazardous products, processes used to manage the material must be clearly defined in the chemical management program. Employees need to know if they call the professional expert designated by management, if they are to call the bomb squad or emergency response, etc.

Maintaining a professional and independent profile is particularly important for consultants who serve as expert witnesses (a topic that is discussed below). He or she has to avoid the perception that he is a professional expert —a hired gun. 

Technical specification preparation has been done by competent professional experts who have sufficient experience of designing, operating, and maintaining such plants with similar product mix and who have the necessary authorisation. 

Professionals who work with the product every day develop a sensory expertise that could be the core of their activity (e.g. perfumers), or that may be less conscious and yet extremely useful in their work (e.g. plant operators, hairdressers). These represent a specific category of professional experts whose job is to communicate sensory information to the consumers to help them make their choice. A very good example of a sensory salesperson is the seller at perfume stores. Another example is the sommelier . 

As already mentioned FP is in hne with the professional work rhythms and the evaluation could very weU be conducted in the frame of a working meeting. Its flexibility and the fact that evaluation consists of only one session make it particularly weU adapted for working with professional experts and internal panellists. 

In the first experiment, subjects were six highly experienced French professional experts (nez), dedicated to selective fragrance creation. It is not usual to include several such experienced subjects in sensory experiments, except maybe in studies with oenologists. These experts were two men and four women, aged from 26 to 55 years old. One subject was a fragrance analytical development expert for LVMH brands, and the others were perfumers dedicated to perfume CTcation from different companies. 

So it was the amateur scientist van den Broek who confounded all the professional experts and first perceived the importance of atomic number as the ordering criterion for the elements. But as is often the case with scientific discoveries, it is the person who completes the task who is given the most credit, as seen in the case of Mendeleev and the discovery of periodicity. 

Proprietary standards are prepared by professional experts within specific industries, professional societies, and associations. These standards are determined by membership vote, as opposed to consensus. An example of these would be the Compressed Gas Association s Pamphlet P-1, Safe Handling of Compressed Gases. This proprietary standard covers requirements for the handling, storage, and use of compressed gas cylinders (OSHATI, 1994, chap. 2). 

In the Swiss quality reference system RQS [8] (see also Sect. 35.7.6) audits are performed by a certification expert together with a professional expert a hospital pharmacist who has received extra audits training. The certification amomits to RQS as well as ISO. 

As stated previously, the original OSHA standards and regulations have come from three main sources consensus standards, proprietary standards, and federal laws that existed when the OSHAct became law. Consensus standards are industry-wide standards developed by organizations. They are discussed and substantially agreed upon through industry consensus. OSHA has incorporated into its standards the standards of two primary groups the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Proprietary standards are prepared by professional experts from specific industries, professional societies, and associations. The proprietary standards are determined by a straight membership vote, not by consensus. 

The Engineer focused public attention on quandaries that dominated professional societies and national commissions throughout the postwar era. For this study, a panel of experts specialized in the area of OHS has been chosen. Initially, 29 experts, including 13 academic experts, 8 technical/ professional experts and 8 experts in consulting/ audit have been contacted. 

Eventually the risk analyst hands over the risk description of the aspects and alternatives requested. At this point, there is a very important question that needs to be reflected upon by the manager, preferably even before reading the report. Should the risk description be indiscrirninately accepted and assimilated as the manager s own Informal arguments in favor could be that risk analysts are professional experts paid to do the job and it could be difficult to challenge that from a manager s ignorant position.
