Interestingly, too much security can have the undesired effect of reducing protection. If controls are too rigid, making normal productivity difficult, workers have a tendency to develop techniques for circumventing security measures. Complex electronic key doors are wedged open. Passwords are recorded on desk calendars. Systems are not turned off when unattended to avoid complex log-in procedures. In developing security controls a balance with appropriate access must be considered. 

Lithium-ion [71-73] and lithium-ion polymer batteries [74] are commodity products in consumer applications, but are not yet ready for use in the harsh automotive environment. Although in an advanced state of development, the batteries are not expected to be ready for mass production for use in automotive applications in the near future. If limitations in calendar life at elevated temperature can be overcome and production costs can be lowered to an acceptable level, the lithium-ion battery may become a serious competitor to both AGM lead-acid and Ni-MH batteries, as the lithium-ion system combines the strengths of both these battery systems. 

Another ongoing process during design development is the function of raw-material development with the anticipation of using the materials in the product line. More time needs to be spent if new raw materials such as fabric are to be developed. This involves working with the R D teams from raw-material suppliers to develop materials and test them to achieve expected standards. As this is a time-consuming process, it must be well planned in advance and monitored as scheduled in the PD calendar. Preliminary cost estimates are developed for the styles, which are required to make financial decisions for the existence of the style in the line.
