A third factor is the ease with which various membrane materials can be fabricated into a particular module design. Almost ah membranes can be formed into plate-and-frame, spiral, and tubular modules, but many membrane materials caimot be fabricated into hollow-fine fibers or capihary fibers. Finahy, the suitabiHty of the module design for high pressure operation and the relative magnitude of pressure drops on the feed and permeate sides of the membrane can sometimes be important considerations. [Pg.74]

The same four operating steps are used with the complex batch reactor as with the simple batch reactor. The powerhil capabiUties of the complex batch reactor offset their relatively high capital cost. These reactors can operate at phenol to alkene mole ratios from 0.3 to 1 and up. This abiUty is achieved by designing for positive pressure operation, typically 200 to 2000 kPa (30 to 300 psig), and for the use of highly selective catalysts. Low pressure operation became routine with the appHcation of new catalysts that are resistant to deactivation and withstand the low pressures. The catalysts are bimetallic most incorporate rhenium as well as platinum (95). The large variety of displacement-type flmd-transport devices makes it difficult to list characteristics common to each. Vessels for high-temperature serviee may be beyond the temperature hmits of the stress tables in the ASME Codes. Sec tion TII, Division 1, makes provision for construction of pressure vessels up to 650°C (1200°F) for carbon and low-alloy steel and up to 815°C (1500°F) for stainless steels (300 series). If a vessel is required for temperatures above these values and above 103 kPa (15 Ibf/in"), it would be necessaiy, in a code state, to get permission from the state authorities to build it as a special project. Above 815°C (1500°F), even the 300 series stainless steels are weak, and creep rates increase rapidly. If the metal which resists the pressure operates at these temperatures, the vessel pressure and size will be limited. The vessel must also be expendable because its life will be short. Aromatic polyamide (aramid) membranes are a copolymer of 1-3 diaminobenzene with 1-3 and 1-4 benzenedicarboxylic acid chlorides. They are usually made into fine hollow fibers, 93 [Lm outer diameter by 43 [Lm inner diameter. Some flat sheet is made for spirals. These membranes are widely used for seawater desalination and to some extent for other process applications. The hollow fibers are capable of veiy high-pressure operation and have considerably greater hydrolytic resistance than does CA.
