Differential pressure flowmeters are suited to high- and moderate-velocity flow of gas and clean, low-viscosity liquids. Venturi flowmeters (Fig. 18.9(a)) are the most accurate, but they are large and expensive. Orifice flowmeters (Fig. 18.9(b)) aresmaUer, less expensive, and much less accurate than venturi flowmeters. Nozzle flowmeters (Fig. 18.9(c)) are a compromise between venturi and orifice flowmeters. Pipe-bend flowmeters (Fig. 18.9(d)), which can essentially be installed in any bend in an existing piping system, are used primarily for gross flow rate measurements. Pitot-static flowmeters (Fig. 18.9(e)) are used in flows which have a large cross-sectional area, such as in wind tunnels. Pitot-static flowmeters are also used in freestream applications such as airspeed indicators for aircraft. [Pg.1927]

Example 3 Venturi Flowmeter An incompressible fluid flows through the venturi flowmeter in Fig. 6-7. An equation is needed to relate the flow rate Q to the pressure drop measured by the manometer. This problem can he solved using the mechanical energy balance. In a well-made venturi, viscous losses are neghgihle, the pressure drop is entirely the result of acceleration into the throat, and the flow rate predicted neglecting losses is quite accurate. Flow is an important measurement whose calibration presents some challenges. When a flow measurement device is used in applications such as custody transfer, provision is made to pass a known flow through the meter. However, such a provision is costly and is not available for most in-process flowmeters. Without such a provision, a true cahbration of the flow element itself is not possible. For orifice meters, calibration of the flowmeter normally involves cahbration of the differential pressure transmitter, and the orifice plate is usually only inspected for deformation, abrasion, and so on. Similarly, cahbration of a magnetic flowmeter normally involves cahbration of the voltage measurement circuitry, which is analogous to calibration of the differential pressure transmitter for an orifice meter. [Pg.759]

Orifice Meter The most widely used flowmeter involves placing a fixed-area flow restriction (an orifice) in the pipe carrying the fliiid. This flow restriction causes a pressure drop that can be related to flow rate. Rotameters The rotameter, an example of which is shown in Fig. 10-21, has become one of the most popular flowmeters in the chemical-process industries. It consists essentially of a plummet, or float, which is free to move up or down in a vertical, slightly tapered tube having its small end down. The fluid enters the lower end of the tube and causes the float to rise until the annular area between the float and the wall of the tube is such that the pressure drop across this constriction is just sufficient to support the float. Typically, the tapered tube is of glass and carries etched upon it a nearly linear scale on which the position of the float may be visually noted as an indication of the flow. [Pg.896]

Before taking the sample train to the test site, it is wise to prepare the operating curves for the particular job. With most factory-assembled trains, these curves are a part of the package. If a sampling train is assembled from components, the curves must be developed. The type of curves will vary from source to source and from train to train. Examples of useful operating curves include (1) velocity versus velocity pressure at various temperatures (6), (2) probe tip velocity versus flowmeter readings at various temperatures, and (3) flowmeter calibration curves of flow versus pressure drop. Dali Flow Tube - The advantage is this type of flowmeter is that it has a permanent head loss of only 5 % of the measured pressure differential. This is the lowest pressure drop of all orifice meter designs. Flow ratios as high as 1 10 (e.g., 1.0 to 10 kg/s) can be measured within + 2% of actual flow. Dali flow mbes are available in different materials and diameters up to 1500 mm. [Pg.280]

A more serious limit to this implementation is due to the volume of the recycling pump and associated equipment such as flowmeters and pressure sensors. As the pump moves with respect to the zones, its volume leads to a dead volume dissymmetry, which can lead to a decrease extract and raffinate purities. This decrease can be significant for SMB with short columns and/or compounds with low retention. In a recent study of the transport of coarse solids in a horizontal pipeline of 38 mrrt diameter, pressure drop, as a function not only of mixture velocity (determined by an electromagnetic flowmeter) but also of in-line concentration of solids and liquid velocity. The solids concentration was determined using a y-ray absorption technique, which depends on the difference in the attenuation of y-rays by solid and liquid. The liquid velocity was determined by a sail injection method,1"1 in which a pulse of salt solution was injected into the flowing mixture, and the time taken for the pulse to travel between two electrode pairs a fixed distance apart was measured, It was then possible, using equation 5.17, to calculate the relative velocity of the liquid to the solids. This relative velocity was found to increase with particle size and to be of the same order as the terminal falling velocity of the particles in the liquid. [Pg.207]

When a bluff body is interspersed in a fluid stream, the flow is split into two parts. The boundary layer (see Chapter 11) which forms over the surface of the obstruction develops instabilities and vortices are formed and then shed successively from alternate sides of the body, giving rise to what is known as a von Karman vortex street. This process sets up regular pressure variations downstream from the obstruction whose frequency is proportional to the fluid velocity, as shown by Strouai. 9.
