Filtration. Any type of clarification is foUowed by filtration through leaf-type vertical or horizontal pressure filters. Carbonatated Hquors, containing calcium carbonate, may require addition of diatomaceous earth as a filter precoat. Phosphatated Hquors are generally filtered with the addition of diatomaceous earth as precoat and body feed. [Pg.19]

Another type of filter in use today is a horizontal (or vertical) pressure leaf filter with a special cake squeezing device. Between each pair of hollow filter leaves is an impermeable flexible diaphragm that can, when inflated, apply pressure on one side of each adjacent leaf. As the cake forms, the pressure on the leaf side is less than on the chamber side. The diaphragms move toward the leaf, compressing the olein from the stearine cake. [Pg.2454]

Various filter designs are available to the industry, including plate and frame filter presses, horizontal tank/ vertical leaf pressure filters with retractable bundles or shells, and vertical tank/vertical leaf pressure filters. The latter (Figure 29) has been accepted by the industry as perhaps the best overall choice in terms of price, performance, space requirements, and ease of automation. Filter sizes up to 85-m filter area/filter are available with this model. However, the horizontal tank/vertical leaf model with either retractable bundle or retractable shell also has its proponents. Commonly, a major factor in deciding on this type filter is the fact that these units are available in sizes up to 200-m filter area/filter. [Pg.2736]

There are several types of powder filter, namely (i) plate and frame, (ii) vertical leaf, (iii) horizontal leaf and (iv) candle or edge filters. The plate and frame filter is more popular in Europe than America [4, 12]. It comprises a succession of vertically dispersed plates each covered with a cellulose sheet folded at the top of the plate. Each plate alternates with a frame which will receive in succession the precoats and the beer plus body feed. The beer passes through the kieselguhr bed, then the sheet and into the plate from which it discharges (Fig. 20.17). Leaf filters have a series of stainless steel leaves disposed either vertically or horizontally inside a filter body. Both surfaces of vertical leaves are used for filtration (Fig. 20.18) but only the upper surfaces in the case of horizontal leaves (Fig. 20.19). The kieselguhr adheres to the septa because of the pressure at which the beer is forced into the filter. At the... [Pg.330]

FQtration with Filter Aids. A wide range of pressure and vacuum cake filters can be used with both precoat and body aid fihration. Most of these operate in the batch mode and include the filter press, the vertical and horizontal leaf filters with sluice or centrihigal disduuge and the vertical tubular fih . The rotary drum vacuum fitter works in a semi-batch shion in that the precoat is removed progressively as the fitration proceeds. [Pg.170]

These units are sometimes described as pressure vessel filters the vessels used to contain the filter dements are cylindrical designs, positioned vertically or horizontally. These vessels operate in batch mode, with filter cycles similar to plate and fimne filters. The variations available in the type of elements (leaf or candle) and its position in the pressure vessel, lead to a large number of available designs [Purchas, 1981], General operating features of pressure vessel filters have been described [Bosley, 1986] these units are considered to be cleaner and more reliable than other pressure filters, provided adequate attention is given to filter cake properties. [Pg.470]

The two equipment simulation modules provide calculation sequences for more than 20 types of vacuum and pressure filters, potentially involving combinations of cake formation, compression, gas deliquoring and washing. Batch filters include single and multi-element leaf filters, filter presses and diaphragm and tube presses while continuous filters include the horizontal belt, drum, disc, table and tilting pan filters. The user is able to define filter... [Pg.226]

The tank-leaf pressure filter (Figure 50.4) features a number of leaves (filtering elements) suspended within a closed vessel. Common variations involve the arrangement of the tank and leaves into various vertical and horizontal combinations. Vertical tanks normally contain vertical leaves whereas horizontal tanks may have either vertical or horizontal leaves. The leaves are hollow shells fitted with support grids and covered with a metal gauze or woven fabric. They... [Pg.1207]

There is a large variety of conventional filtration equipment. One of the most common types of batch filter is the plate-and-frame filter (Figure 12.4). This filter consists of a number of filter chambers with medium-covered filter plates alternated with frames that provide space for the cake. The chambers are closed and tightened by a hydraulic ram or screw which pushes the plate and frame together. Other types of batch filters are horizontal or vertical leaf filter, tray filter, tube or candle filter, and Nutsche filter. These are all enclosed pressure filters. [Pg.167]

Pressure Leaf Filters Sometimes called tank filters, they consist of flat filtering elements (leaves) supported in a pressure shell. The leaves are circ ilar, arc-sided, or rectangular, and they have filtering surfaces on both faces. The shell is a cylindrical or conical tank. Its axis may be horizontal or vertical, and the filter type is described by its shell axis orientation. [Pg.1712]

Vertical Pressure Leaf Filters are essentially the same as Horizontal Plate Filters except for the orientation of the filter elements which are vertical rather than horizontal. They are applied for the polishing slurries with very lov solids content of 1-5% or for cake filtration with a solids concentration of 20-25%. As with the horizontal plate filter the vertical leaf filters are also well suited for handling flammable, toxic and corrosive materials since they are autoclaved and designed for hazardous environments when high pressure and safe operation are required. Likewise, they may be readily jacketed for applications whenever hot or cold temperatures are to be preserved. The largest leaf filters in horizontal vessels have a filtration area of 300 m and vertical vessels 100 m both designed for an operating pressure of 6 bar. [Pg.196]
