Other designs squee2e the cake between two permeable belts or between a screw conveyor of diminishing diameter, or pitch, and its permeable enclosure. The available filters which use mechanical compression can be classified into four principal categories, ie, membrane plate presses, tube presses, belt presses, and screw presses. 

Membrane plate and tube presses are dealt with here belt and screw presses are included in the discussion of continuous pressure filters. 

The ECLP tube press was originally developed for the filtration of china clay but has been used with many other slurries such as those in mining, Ti02, cement, sewage sludge, etc. The typical cycle time is about four minutes or more.

The unique design of the tube press allows for this cycle to be amended, however, to include air pressing and/or cake washing. With air pressing, once the initial filtration is complete, air is introduced between the membrane and the cake. The pressure cycle is then repeated. Typically an air press will further reduce the moisture content of china clay by 2.5-8 per cent. The final moisture contents with other materials are shown in Figure 7.25. Water washing, which is used for the removal of soluble salts, is similar to air pressing, except that it is water that is introduced between membrane and cake. 

Whichever you use, make a circular cardboard plug to fit inside the tube, press a short length of the plastic tape on it, fit it inside the tube, as shown, and lap both ends of the tape over the outside. Then wrap one thickness of tape around the plug tape. 

Various types of equipments are available. The principal batch presses are the box, platen, pot, curb, cage [5], and tube press. A filter press with a compression device is widely used in various fields. For continuous operation, the screw press, the roller mills, and the belt press are in common use. In connection with drying operations, the following devices are explained.

Compared with the previously mentioned systems, pressure filters consume by far the greatest volume of fabric, being employed in a host of industries including mining applications, food processing, chemical process industries and effluent treatment. The most extensively used type of pressure filter is the filter press (of which there are several variations), though other pressure filters are also widely found with titles such as candle filter tower belt press , pressure leaf filter tube press , multi-roll press and pressure...

A tube press comprises two concentric cylinders where a permeable tube covered with a filter cloth is positioned centrally within a solid outer tube lined by an elastomer diaphragm (see Figure 1.37). The filter cycle is initiated by pumping the feed suspension into the annular space between the inner tube and the diaphragm. With sufficient suspension in the press, pressure is applied to induce radial filtration. This process is most often performed at constant pressure via the diaphragm in two stages where a lower pressure is used initially to promote more even cake formation. When filtration is complete the elastomer diaphragm is further inflated (hydraulically) to deliquor the cake via mechanical expression.
