Mechanical scenarios are mai r. They include metal presses, buzzers for dressing or planing timber, lathes and drill presses. Automatic or semi-automatic systems include contact or spot-welding machines on vehicle production lines, either controlled by an operator or fully robotic, automatic control of chemical process facihties such as oil refining (with a manual override), car cruise control and aircraft autopilots. Mechanical systems place large amounts of energy at the operator s disposal so a high-powered car and an inexperienced driver can be a fatal combination. [Pg.453]

Both flush plates and recessed plates can be specified. Recessed plates obviate the need for the frames but are tougher on filter cloths due to the strain around the edges. These presses are more suitable for automation because of the difficulty of the automatic removal of residual cake from the frames in a plate-and-frame press. Recessed plates with no frames limit the chamber width to less than 32 mm to limit the strain on the cloth, whereas plate-and-frame presses allow this to be more than 40 mm if necessary. [Pg.399]

The vertical recessed plate automatic press is shown schematically in Figure 15. Unlike the conventional filter press with plates hanging down and linked in a horizontal direction, this filter press has the plates in a horizontal plane placed one upon another. This design offers semicontinuous operation, saving in floor space, and easy cleaning of the cloth, but it allows only the lower face of each chamber to be used for filtration. [Pg.399]

The vertical recessed plate automatic press, shown schematically in Figure 15 and described previously, is another example of a horizontal belt pressure filter. Cycle times ate short, typically between 10 and 30 minutes, and the operation is fully automated. The maximum cake thickness is about 35 mm washing and dewatering (by air displacement) of cakes is possible. Apphcations include treatment of mineral slurries, sugar, sewage sludge, and fillers like talc, clay, and whiting. [Pg.407]

After pressure appHcation, the top punch is removed and the compact is ejected from the cavity by the bottom punch. The cavity is then refilled and is ready for another charge. This cycle is repeated automatically at a rate that varies with the part and size and the complexity and dowabiUty of the powder. Pressing equipment producing relatively small, simple parts can operate at up to 200 parts/min. Rotary presses with multiple die sets are even faster. For ordinary materials and higher production rates, P/M forging can be used (26,28). After parts are compacted and sintered to medium density, they are reheated, lubricated, and fed into a hot-forming or P/M-forging press. The part is formed by one stroke of the press in a closed precision die. A typical hot-forming press setup includes die sets, automatic die cooling and lubrication, transfer mechanism, an induction heating unit for preforms, and controls. [Pg.184]

Significant improvements were made in the 1980s and early 1990s in high capacity, automated variable volume filters that incorporate automatic pressure filtration, expression, washing, and air displacement. When rods are required they are placed in wooden trays in a formolising bath. If the requirement is for a disc or blank such as used by the button trade the extrudate is cut up by an automatic guillotine and the blanks are immersed in the formalin solution. For manufacture of sheets the rods are placed in moulds and pressed into sheets before formolising. Many attractive patterns may be made by pressing different coloured rods into grooves set on the bias to the rods, thus forming new multi-coloured rods.
