Prepare the Presentation

Break the speaking project into three parts Prepare, present, and follow-up. The first part requires, by far, the most effort. However, all three parts require careful attention if you want to use speaking to make things happen. The following discussion addresses each of the three parts. [Pg.99]

Review the earlier writing sections of this chapter titled Define the Purpose and Profile the Audience. The same principles apply, supplemented with some additional thoughts about the audience. You might ask for names of likely participants. You may know some of them and that can help you shape your message. For example, you are a consultant and will speak to the local Kiwanis club. You learn that Mayor Susan Jones will be in the audience. As a result, you include in your presentation a comment about your firm s award-winning municipal projects. [Pg.99]

As with a written document, especially a major document, your audience may consist of many audiences. However, unlike a document that can be written at various levels and divided into different sections so the readers can choose which portions they want to read, you must make the entire oral presentation to the entire audience. This is a major challenge. Try to have something to say to each audience segment. [Pg.99]

If you are one of a group of speakers, find out as much as you can about the other speakers, such as their topics and the chronology of the presentations. Also, determine the total time allotted for your presentation and post-presentation questions and discussion and respect those limits. Determine if you will be permitted to entertain the questions immediately after your presentation or if all questions will be deferred until all speakers have completed their formal remarks. [Pg.99]

Weeks before a presentation to structural engineers, I asked the session organizer to help me profile the audience. He provided this description The audience will be about five percent students, 40 percent owners, 50 percent designers and five percent other, including architects. Rhenium occupies a very important place in the development of the chemistry of complexes containing metal metal double, triple and quadruple bonds. This chemistry involves coordination complexes that contain pairs or trinuclear clusters of rhenium atoms and has been surveyed in a recent monograph entitled Multiple Bonds Between Metal Atoms .5 This source, which covers the literature up to early 1981, has also been invaluable in preparing the present review and can be consulted for a more complete and detailed coverage of these classes of complexes. [Pg.127]

IR spectra can be obtained regardless of the physical state of a sample—solid, liquid, gas, or dissolved in some solvent. If the sample is a liquid, a drop or two is placed between two sodium chloride disks, through which the IR beam is passed. Solids may be dissolved in a suitable solvent such as carbon tetrachloride or chloroform. More commonly, a solid sample is mixed with potassium bromide and the mixture pressed into a thin wafer, which is placed in the path of the IR beam.
