Precepts

This is not the place to discuss the frequently reviewed historical and philosophical aspects of alchemy, but it is worthwhile to recall some rather late adherence to the precepts of alchemy by giants of the human intellectual endeavor. Johann Wolfgang Goethe is best known for his poetry and literature as the author of Faust. Tie himself, however, considered some of his major achievements to be in science. His interests were varied but also related to chemistry. He developed an early interest in alchemy, which, however, he overcame in later life. Goethe s classic character Faust reflects his fascination with the alchemist s effort to produce gold but eventually recognizes its futility and failure. 

In one biosensor design, the chem preceptive nerve fibers of the anteimules of the blue crab Callinectes sapidus are coimected to a micropipet electrode. This assembly has been termed a receptrode (2). The receptrode created from Callinectes sapidus responds to the presence of amino acids (1) (qv) in concentrations as low as 10 M. 

In suspension processes the fate of the continuous liquid phase and the associated control of the stabilisation and destabilisation of the system are the most important considerations. Many polymers occur in latex form, i.e. as polymer particles of diameter of the order of 1 p.m suspended in a liquid, usually aqueous, medium. Such latices are widely used to produce latex foams, elastic thread, dipped latex rubber goods, emulsion paints and paper additives. In the manufacture and use of such products it is important that premature destabilisation of the latex does not occur but that such destabilisation occurs in a controlled and appropriate manner at the relevant stage in processing. Such control of stability is based on the general precepts of colloid science. As with products from solvent processes diffusion distances for the liquid phase must be kept short furthermore, care has to be taken that the drying rates are not such that a skin of very low permeability is formed whilst there remains undesirable liquid in the mass of the polymer. For most applications it is desirable that destabilisation leads to a coherent film (or spongy mass in the case of foams) of polymers. To achieve this the of the latex compound should not be above ambient temperature so that at such temperatures intermolecular diffusion of the polymer molecules can occur.

Figure 12.20 illustrates what (we will argue below) is the fundamental difference between conventional physics (shown on the left) and the conceptual cornerstone of a generalized new physics built upon the precepts of CA and the dynamics of complex adaptive systems (illustrated at right). 

The history of the development of a wide range of catalytic processes illustrates the generality of the points we have made in the previous sections to such an extent that we can sum up with a set of precepts for the improvement of routes to, and of processes for, the manufacture of chemical products. 

Cut Out Reactive Intermediates which Waste Energy. This precept is illustrated by the general move away from acetylene chemistry to ethylene over the past two decades. 

There is one pathway, but two positive terms and no negative ones. The summation results because ke represents a rate constant for equilibration, not the rate. The precept with which this section started is applicable to the rate itself, not to an equilibration rate constant. 

Without further refinement, the value of the equilibrium constant for reaction (7-73) seemingly would depend on [H+]. Clearly, that supposition violates a very fundamental precept of thermodynamics. With the help of microscopic reversibility, the dilemma is resolved. It specifies that the equilibrium constant is separately realized for each pathway ... 

The precept just set forth so rigidly is violated in only one special case. In every instance that constitutes an exception, the rate law does not give the composition of the transition state. Most of the exceptions are therefore chain reactions. 

How does one know when the complete roster of reaction schemes that are consistent with the rate law has been obtained One method is based on an analogy between electrical circuits and reaction mechanisms.13 One constructs an electrical circuit analogous to the reaction scheme. Resistors correspond to transition states, junctions to intermediates, and terminals to reactants and products. The precepts are these (1) any other electrical circuit with the same conductance corresponds to a different but kinetically equivalent reaction scheme, and (2) these circuits correspond to all of the fundamentally different schemes. 

Traditional use data are available that supports the precepts that they are not harmful under the conditions of use, and that efficacy is plausible based on longstanding use and experience. 

In many respects, the successes of this model are remarkable. Iron(O) possesses a total of eight electrons in its valence shell. To satisfy the eighteen-electron rule, five two-electron donors are needed, and compounds such as [Fe(CO)5] are formed. These molecules also obey simple VSEPR precepts, and [Fe(CO)s] adopts a trigonal bipyramidal geometry. Conversely, the use of two five-electron donor ligands such as the strong r-acceptor cyclopentadienyl, Cp, gives the well-known compound ferrocene (9.3). 

If teaching and learning about the submicro is complex, then that about the symbolic is even more so. In Chapter 4, Taber unpicks in detail the ranges of symbolisms used in chemistry the spread of types invoked, those used to represent chemical entities and those used to represent reactions between them. In each case, he analyses the educational problems that they present. He concludes with some broad precepts about how symbolic representations might best be presented in chemical education. 

Up to now, we have been concerned with the MX compound as a h q)Othetical example of the solid state. We will now extend these concepts to more complicated ones such as binary and ternary compounds. We will use the precepts already developed for the simple MX compound. For the sake of simplicity, we restrict ourselves to binary compounds, that is- one cation and one anion. Electrochemical methods of protection rest on different precepts (1) electroplating of the corroding metal with a thin protective layer of a more corrosion-resistant metal, (2) electrochemical oxidation of the surface or application of other types of surface layer, (3) control of polarization characteristics of the corroding metal (the position and shape of its polarization curves), and (4) control of potential of the corroding metal. 

Commodities in the OPMBS were assigned to laboratories based on the precept that no one laboratory should be overburdened. Thus, the most difficult commodities, based on information obtained during method development, were distributed among all four participating laboratories. 

The Emerald Formula is a seven-stepped process derived from the precepts of the Emerald Tablet that became the basis of all the alchemist s experiments. Although the alchemists went to great pains to conceal the true order of the steps of the formula, the correct order according to the Emerald Tablet is Calcination, Dissolution, Separation, Conjunction, Fermentation, Distillation, and Coagulation... 

For the past century and a half, mainstream science has assumed a positivist stance, one which increasingly seeks to describe the world in nonpersonal terms (Simon, 1963 Kolakowski, 1968). Positivism carries several meanings and has been notoriously difficult to define, yet certain precepts... 

Functionalized sugars and amino acids have been used to create unique morpholine scaffolds which were further elaborated to create a second generation of morpholino derivatives following the precepts of the build/couple/pair approach [73]. 

The key precept for any strategy would involve complete stereochemical control and precision in the degree of sulfidation. Accordingly, we envisioned that the epipolysulfides could arise from the ionization of a C15 hemiaminal derivative and subsequent cyclization of a polysulfane onto the resultant /V-acyliminium ion. It now appears that much more careful thought is required in the selection of systems which may offer the prospect of yielding unambiguous results. In particular, the choice of solvent and initiator must be considered very carefully, and features such as mechanisms of initiation, catalyst efficiency, nature of end-groups, and the internal order of reactions need to be explored much more thoroughly than has been customary in the past. Too much effort has been wasted by ignoring the precept First the Chemistry, then the Kinetics .
