Power plants characteristics

Substantial research and development is ongoing to define the characteristics of improved lightwater-cooled nuclear power plants (62—65). The safety area is no exception. [Pg.244]

Silicone foam thus formed has an open ceU stmcture and is a relatively poor insulating material. Cell size can be controlled by the selection of fillers, which serve as bubble nucleating sites. The addition of quartz as a filler gready improves the flame retardancy of the foam char yields of >65% can be achieved. Because of its excellent dammabiUty characteristics, siUcone foam is used in building and constmction fire-stop systems and as pipe insulation in power plants. Typical physical properties of siUcone foam are Hsted in Table 10. [Pg.56]

Industrial use of cogeneration leads to small, dispersed electric-power-generation installations—an alternative to complete reliance on large central power plants. Because of the relatively snort distances over which thermal energy can be transported, process-heat generation is characteristically an on-site process, with or without cogeneration. [Pg.2405]

The NPRDS is an industry-wide system for monitoring the performance of selected systems and components at U.S. commercial nuclear power plants. Information in NPRDS is derived from a standardized format input report prepared by U.S. nuclear plant licensees. The plants are as)ced to submit failure reports on catastrophic events and degraded failures within the defined reportable scope reporting of incipient events is optional. Command faults are not reportable unless they malce an entire system unavailable. In addition, the plants are as)ced to file component engineering reports on all components within the selected systems and reportable scope. These reports contain detailed design data, operating characteristics, and performance data on the selected systems and components (over 3000 components, from approximately 30 systems, per unit). The selected systems are primarily safety systems. [Pg.64]

Another area of success has been in applied materials research. Because of the integral nature of materials to advances in energy production and consumption, the laboratories have developed a number of toughened ceramics. When used as a replacement for steel, they will improve the energy performance characteristics of high-temperature applications for components of combined-cycle power plants and vehicle engines. [Pg.820]

We may thus conclude after this short overview on DeNO technologies that NH3-SCR using catalysts based on V-W-oxides supported on titania is a well-established technique for stationary sources of power plants and incinerators, while for other relevant sources of NO, such as nitric acid tail gases, where emissions are characterized from a lower temperature and the presence of large amounts of NOz, alternative catalysts based on transition metal containing microporous materials are possible. Also, for the combined DeNO -deSO, alternative catalysts would be necessary, because they should operate in the presence of large amounts of SO,.. Similarly, there is a need to develop new/improved catalysts for the elimination of NO in FCC emissions, again due to the different characteristics of the feed with respect to emissions from power plants. [Pg.6]

To check the influence of PCB oil admixture to the fly ash on the thermodynamic conversion of the whole mixture, the calculations were done for various amounts of organic compounds. The results for power plant ash thermodynamic conversion with temperature rise and with oil-PCB s addition are shown in Fig.l (A and B). These figures show that chlorine appears in the form of HC1 with a characteristic content minimum in the temperature range 1300-1700 K. In the range of 1000 -3000 K the offgas is rich in hydrogen. Maximum value of H2 is determined by the methane decomposition, which occurs above 1200 K. Due to different the... [Pg.94]

There are 720 coal-fired power plants in the USA. When coal is burned in these power plants, two types of ash are produced coal fly ash and bottom ash. Coal fly ash is the very fine particulate matter carried in the flue gas bottom ash (or slag) is the larger, heavier particles that fall to the bottom of the hopper after combustion [261-264]. The physical and chemical characteristics of these ashes vary depending on the type of coal burned. These ashes are characterized by the following ... [Pg.219]

Connection to the utility grid provides many advantages to on-site power producers such as reliability improvement and increase of load factor, as well as giving the electric utilities a chance to improve the supply capability. When a fuel cell power plant is used for electric utility applications, the inverter is the interface equipment between the fuel cell and the electrical network. The inverter acts as the voltage and frequency adjuster to the final load. The interface conditions require the following characteristics for the inverter ... [Pg.227]

Investment costs for SHP plants vary according to site-specific and local characteristics. The most important system and cost elements are (1) civil engineering, (2) equipment, and (3) turbine. The electrical generator represents less than 5% of the total cost of a power plant and the efficiency of generators for new plants is already close to 100%. However, standardization of generator equipment for small hydropower could further reduce installation and maintenance costs. [Pg.26]

In the early 1950 s, it was reported by Haagen-Smit that many of the characteristics of photochemical smog could be explained by the presence of ozone and other photochemical oxidants. These substances, he believed, were formed in the atmosphere as a result of chemical reactions involving nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons present in automobile exhaust. Significant quantities of nitrogen oxides were also emitted by power plants. [Pg.1]

The major characteristic of technetium is that it is the only element within the 29 transition metal-to-nonmetal elements that is artificially produced as a uranium-fission product in nuclear power plants. It is also the tightest (in atomic weight) of all elements with no stable isotopes. Since all of technetiums isotopes emit harmful radiation, they are stored for some time before being processed by solvent extraction and ion-exchange techniques. The two long-lived radioactive isotopes, Tc-98 and Tc-99, are relatively safe to handle in a well-equipped laboratory. [Pg.131]
