Power lifter

Anabolic steroid-induced hiccups have been reported in a champion power lifter (31). The hiccups occurred within 12 hours of an increase in the dose of oral methandrostenolone from 50 to 75 mg/day, and persisted for 12 consecutive hours until medical attention was sought. The hiccups abated rapidly after the dose of methandrostenolone was reduced, but he was unwilling to abandon it completely. 

Anabolic steroid hormones are sometimes self-administered by power lifters and bodybuilders. This practice results in changes in the plasma levels of both LDL-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol. Each of these changes creates an increased risk for atherosclerosis. Are these changes increases or decreases (Consult Webb et al, 1984.)... 

EXAMPLE 13.30 Creatine phosphate concentration in the cytoplasm of skeletal muscle is 15 mM. Since the rate of ATP consumption during intense exercise is 3 mmol L s , there is potentially a 5 s supply of creatine phosphate. Many sprinters and power lifters attempt to increase the amount of creatine phosphate in their muscles by ingesting creatine as a dietary supplement. There is strong evidence to suggest that this strategy is effective, but the long-term effects on general health, particularly kidney function, are yet to be determined.

Plant data on an 8-ft diameter rod mill showed that when smooth liners were replaced with lifter bars spaced 300 mm (12 in) apart, liner wear decreased by 13-fold, production increased 50 percent, and power per ton decreased by 34 percent [Howat and Vermeulen, Journal South African Institute Mining and Metallurgy, 86, 251-259 (July 1986)]. When a smooth-waUed baU miU was fitted with lifter bars the production of-75 pm material increased 8 percent and thepower/ton decreased 10 percent. Plant tests confirmed previous results [Mead-ers and McPherson, Mining Engineering, 16,81-84 (Sept. 1964)] that optimum lifter bar spacing is from 3 to 5 times bar height.
