Neutral or negatively charged polymeric resins are commonly employed to provide styling benefits in products such as mousses, gels, hairsprays, and setting lotions. Typical examples in use today are the copolymer of vinyl acetate and cro-tonic acid, the copolymer of polyvinyl pyrrolidone and vinyl acetate (PVP/VA), the ethyl ester of the copolymer of polyvinyl methyl ether and maleic anhydride (PVM/MA), and the copolymer of octylacrylamide/acrylates/butylaminoethyl methacrylate (Amphomer). [Pg.427]

Neutral and acidic polymers such as polyvinyl pyrrolidone, copolymers of polyvinyl pyrrolidone with vinyl acetate, and copolymers of methyl vinyl ether with half esters of maleic anhydride, are all used in hair styling and hair setting products. [Pg.208]

Polyquaternium-11 (quaternium-23—Gafquat) is a copolymer of vinyl pyrrolidone and dimethylaminoethyl melliacrylate quaternized with dimethyl sulfate. This polymer is related to the quaternized copolymer of PVP depicted in Table 7-2. One mousse product in retail sale contains both of these cationic polymers. Others contain one cationic polymer and either a neutral or an anionic resin such as polyvinyl pyrrolidone and vinyl acetate copolymer, or a resin such as the butyl ester of polyvinyl methyl ether, a maleic anydride copolymer. [Pg.368]

Copolymers of acrylonitrile and lower acrylates have also been used as thickeners. The proportion of the acrylate in the copolymer was 60-90% by weight the preferred acrylates were the methyl through butyl esters. These authors also tested an extensive list of known and novel thickeners as comparative examples. The latter included nitrile rubber and vinyl acetate-vinyl chloride, methyl methacrylate-butadiene-styrene (MBS), and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) copolymers. The copolymers of this invention were claimed to provide better stability, higher viscosity, less stringing, and better impact strength than do the thickeners of the prior art. The claims of this patent do not cover the disclosed copolymers. Polyvinyl ethers are another class of cyanoacrylate thickeners which have been disclosed but not claimed. ... [Pg.288]
