Polyurethanes mechanical

The addition of diols to diketene acetals is similar to the addition of diols to diisocyanates that leads to the formation of polyurethanes. And, like in polyurethanes, mechanical properties can be widely varied by using different diols. Further, because the condensation between a diketene acetal and a diol, just like... [Pg.54]

Polyurethanes prepared via transesterification of soybean and linseed oils with n-butanol in the presence of lipozyme (a lipase), also possess these improved properties, particularly in the case of MDI-based polyurethanes. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, percentage elongation, elastic modulus, wear resistance, tear resistance. Shore A hardness, and thermostability of vegetable oil-based polyurethane IPNs showed significant improvement at a critical vinyl or acrylic polymer level. [Pg.171]

Gun Propellents. Low sensitivity gun propeUants, often referred to as LOVA (low vulnerabUity ammunition), use RDX or HMX as the principal energy components, and desensitizing binders such as ceUulose acetate butyrate or thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) including poly acetal—polyurethane block copolymers, polystyrene—polyacrjiate copolymers, and glycidyl azide polymers (GAP) to provide the required mechanical... [Pg.40]

The insulating value and mechanical properties of rigid plastic foams have led to the development of several novel methods of buUding constmction. Polyurethane foam panels may be used as unit stmctural components (220) and expanded polystyrene is employed as a concrete base in thin-sheU constmction (221). [Pg.416]

Commonly used materials for cable insulation are poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) compounds, polyamides, polyethylenes, polypropylenes, polyurethanes, and fluoropolymers. PVC compounds possess high dielectric and mechanical strength, flexibiUty, and resistance to flame, water, and abrasion. Polyethylene and polypropylene are used for high speed appHcations that require a low dielectric constant and low loss tangent. At low temperatures, these materials are stiff but bendable without breaking. They are also resistant to moisture, chemical attack, heat, and abrasion. Table 14 gives the mechanical and electrical properties of materials used for cable insulation. [Pg.534]

Step-growth polymerization is characterized by the fact that chains always maintain their terminal reactivity and continue to react together to form longer chains as the reaction proceeds, ie, a -mer + -mer — (a + )-mer. Because there are reactions that foUow this mechanism but do not produce a molecule of condensation, eg, the formation of polyurethanes from diols and diisocyanates (eq. 6), the terms step-growth and polycondensation are not exactly synonymous (6,18,19). [Pg.435]

Hyperbranched polyurethanes are constmcted using phenol-blocked trifunctional monomers in combination with 4-methylbenzyl alcohol for end capping (11). Polyurethane interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) are mixtures of two cross-linked polymer networks, prepared by latex blending, sequential polymerization, or simultaneous polymerization. IPNs have improved mechanical properties, as weU as thermal stabiHties, compared to the single cross-linked polymers. In pseudo-IPNs, only one of the involved polymers is cross-linked. Numerous polymers are involved in the formation of polyurethane-derived IPNs (12). [Pg.344]

Urethane rubbers have found steadily increasing use for oil seals, shoe soles and heels, fork-lift truck tyres, diaphragms, chute linings and a variety of mechanical applications. Fabric coatings resistant to dry cleaning are a recent development. In many of these applications high elasticity is not an important prerequisite so that the polyurethane rubbers must be compared not only with other rubbers but also with a variety of thermoplastics. [Pg.788]

In recent years there has been a renewed appreciation of potential beneficial effects of roughness on a macroscale. For example Morris and Shanahan worked with sintered steel substrates bonded with a polyurethane adhesive [61]. They observed much higher fracture energy for joints with sintered steel compared with those with fully dense steel, and ascribed this to the mechanical interlocking of polymer within the pores. Extra energy was required to extend and break these polymer fibrils. [Pg.335]

Hydrolysis studies compared a polycarbonate urethane with a poly(tetramethyl-ene adipate) urethane and a polyether urethane based on PTMEG. After 2 weeks in 80°C water, the polycarbonate urethane had the best retention of tensile properties [92], Polycarbonates can hydrolyze, although the mechanism of hydrolysis is not acid-catalyzed, as in the case of the polyesters. Polycarbonate polyurethanes have better hydrolysis resistance than do standard adipate polyurethanes, by virtue of the highest retention of tensile properties. It is interesting to note in the study that the PTMEG-based urethanes, renowned for excellent hydrolysis resistance, had lower retention of physical properties than did the polycarbonate urethanes. [Pg.808]

In the special case of pipelines operating at relatively high temperatures such as for the transmission of heavy fuel oil at up to 85°C, heat insulation and electrical insulation are provided by up to 50 mm of foam-expanded polyurethane. As a further insurance against penetration of water, and to prevent mechanical damage, outer coatings of polyethylene (5 mm), butyl laminate tape (0-8 mm) or coal-tar enamel reinforced with glass fibre (2-5 mm) have been used. [Pg.658]

The polyurethane foam used for home insulation uses methanediphenyl-diisoevanate (MDI) as monomer. The MD1 is prepared by acid-cataly/ed reaction of aniline with formaldehyde, followed by treatment w ith phosgene COCl2- Propose mechanisms for both steps. [Pg.1223]

SCRIMP process This Seeman Composites Resin Infusion Process (SCRIMP) is described as a gas-assist resin transfer molding process. As an example glass fiber fabrics/ thermoset vinyl ester polyester plastic and polyurethane foam panels (for insulation) are placed in a segmented tool. A vacuum is pulled with a bag so that a huge amount of plastic can be drawn into the mold (Marco process approach). Its curved roof is made separately and bonded to the box with mechanical and adhesive fastening. It is similar to various reinforced plastics molding processes. [Pg.522]

In an effort to rationalize the basic mechanism, Brown and Jensen (B12) have solved the dynamic energy- and mass-flow equations, allowing for a finite rate of vaporization of the injected fluid. The results of these calculations have shown that both mechanisms can be important. For propellants which require relatively low depressurization rates (such as polyurethane types), the evaporative-cooling mechanism can develop sufficient depressurization rates. For PBAN propellants, direct surface-cooling is the only mechanism whereby estinguishment can be accomplished. [Pg.64]
