Polyurethane dynamic mechanical

Thermal and thermomechanical analyses44 are very important for determining die upper and lower usage temperature of polymeric materials as well as showing how they behave between diose temperature extremes. An especially useful thermal technique for polyurethanes is dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA).45 Uiis is used to study dynamic viscoelastic properties and measures die ability to... [Pg.241]

Short fiber reinforcement of TPEs has recently opened up a new era in the field of polymer technology. Vajrasthira et al. [22] studied the fiber-matrix interactions in short aramid fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites. Campbell and Goettler [23] reported the reinforcement of TPE matrix by Santoweb fibers, whereas Akhtar et al. [24] reported the reinforcement of a TPE matrix by short silk fiber. The reinforcement of thermoplastic co-polyester and TPU by short aramid fiber was reported by Watson and Prances [25]. Roy and coworkers [26-28] studied the rheological, hysteresis, mechanical, and dynamic mechanical behavior of short carbon fiber-filled styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) block copolymers and TPEs derived from NR and high-density polyethylene (HOPE) blends. [Pg.353]

In an NMR analysis of the effects of /-irradiation induced degradation on a specific polyurethane (PU) elastomer system, Maxwell and co-workers [87] used a combination of both H and 13C NMR techniques, and correlated these with mechanical properties derived from dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). 1H NMR was used to determine spin-echo decay curves for three samples, which consisted of a control and two samples exposed to different levels of /-irradiation in air. These results were deconvoluted into three T2 components that represented T2 values which could be attributed to an interfacial domain between hard and soft segments of the PU, the PU soft segment, and the sol... [Pg.430]

Wilkes and coworkers studied polyrotaxanes derived from self-assembly of a polyurethane bearing paraquat moieties and BPP34C10 [130b]. The polyurethanes contained soft (poly(tetramethylene oxide)) and hard (paraquat ionene) segments. Interestingly, dynamic mechanical analysis indicated that polyrotaxanes had higher rubbery plateau moduli than the corresponding backbones. Thermal analysis revealed that the stability was enhanced by the formation of the polyrotaxanes. [Pg.316]

Reaction-induced phase separation is certainly also the reason for which an inhomogeneous structure is observed for photocured polyurethane acrylate networks based on polypropylene oxide (Barbeau et al., 1999). TEM analysis demonstrates the presence of inhomogeneities on the length scale of 10-200 nm, mostly constituted by clusters of small hard units (the diacrylated diisocyanate) connected by polyacrylate chains. In addition, a suborganization of the reacted diisocyanate hard segments inside the polyurethane acrylate matrix is revealed by SAXS measurements. Post-reaction increases the crosslink density inside the hard domains. The bimodal shape of the dynamic mechanical relaxation spectra corroborates the presence of a two-phase structure. [Pg.233]

Extensive dynamic mechanical property studies have been carried out on hydrogen-bonded (81) and nonhydrogen-bonded (60,82) polyurethanes. Several secondary relaxations were found in addition to the major hard- and soft-segment transitions. Molecular mechanisms could... [Pg.26]

The systematic dynamic mechanical study reported here was undertaken to gain additional insight into the molecular relaxation processes which occur in TDI polyurethanes as well as to test the generality of findings developed from investigations of other chemical classes of segmented polyurethanes. [Pg.104]

Both series of polyurethanes were prepared using a prepolymer technique in which reactants were mixed at 70 °C/1 hour, cast into molds at 105 °C/2 hours, and cured at 80 °C/14 hours. The BD/MDI hard segment contents ranged from 0% (transparent, colorless homopolyurethanes) to 30% w/w (opaque, white copolyurethanes). All elastomers were characterized using DSC, dynamic mechanical, and tensile stress-strain measurements. [Pg.428]

Dynamic mechanical property (DMP) measurements are used to evaluate the suitability of a polymer for a particular use in sound and vibration damping. Since the dynamic mechanical properties of a polyurethane are known to be affected by polymer morphology (4), it is important to establish the crystallization and melting behavior as well as the glass transition temperature of each polymer. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to determine these properties and the data used to interpret the dynamic mechanical property results. [Pg.282]
