Polyurethane elastomers adhesives

Elastomeric adhesives are prime candidates for polyurethanes, and polyurethane elastomer adhesives are particularly recommended. Other suitable adhesives include epoxies, modified epoxies, polyamide-epoxy, neoprene, and resorcinol-formaldehyde. The latter offers excellent adhesion, but is somewhat brittle and can fail at relatively low loads. "... 

The preparation of polyurethane aqueous dispersions can be accomplished in several ways. The procedure claimed to yield at present the highest quality products involves the reaction of an isocyanate-terminated prepolymer in a water-miscible solvent, e.g., acetone, with a diamine carboxylate or sulfonate. The resultant polyurethane ionomer solution is mixed with water which forms the dispersion and further chain-extends the polymer. Finally, the organic solvent is removed by distillation and can be recycled. As in the case of the thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer adhesives, dispersions can also be prepared with different degrees of crystallinity in the polyurethanes depending on the nature of the prepolymer. 

Whilst approximately twice the raw material cost of TPO- and S-B-S-type polymers, thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers find applications where abrasion resistance and toughness are particular requirements. Uses include gears, timing and drive belts, footwear (including ski boots) and tyre chains. Polyether-based materials have also achieved a number of significant medical applications. There is also some minor use as hot melt adhesives, particularly for the footwear industry. 

Propylene oxide is produced from the chlorohydrination of propene similar to the process used to make ethylene oxide (see Ethene). A major use of propylene oxide involves hydrating propylene oxide to produces propylene glycol, propylene polyglycols, and other polyether polyols. These products are used to produce both rigid and flexible polyurethane foams, but they are also used to produce polyurethane elastomers, sealants, and adhesives. 

Toluene diisocyanate is commonly produced as a mixture of the 2,4- and 2,6-iso-niers, that is used as a monomer in the preparation of polyurethane foams, elastomers and coatings, as a cross-linking agent for nylon-6, and as a hardener in polyurethane adhesives and finishes. Polyurethane elastomers made from toluene diisocyanates are used in coated fabrics and clay-pipe seals. Polyurethane coatings made from toluene diisocyanates are used in floor finishes, wood finishes and sealers, and in coatings for aircraft, tank trucks, truck trailers and truck fleets (United States National Library of Medicine, 1997). 

Polyurethane Elastomers. Linear polyurethane polymers dissolved in ketone solvents provide a very versatile group of adhesives. Good results are obtained without fillers or other ancillary components in the formulation (indeed, the polymers concerned often are not compatible with the modifying resins and plasticizers that have been used for some time in other types of adhesive). 

Use In polyurethane foams, prepolymers, coatings, elastomers, adhesives, caulks, and sealants. 

Use As cross-linking agents in epoxy coatings, imparting high flexibility and adhesion at low temperatures. Other possible uses are in polyamide and polyurethane coatings, adhesives, elastomers and foams, as intermediates for textile and paper treatment, and viscosity-index improvers in lubricating oils. 

The most important segments of polyester polyol applications are those of polyurethane elastomers (43% of global polyester polyols consumption), flexible foams (15-18%), coatings, adhesives, rigid foams, synthetic leather, and sealants.

Polybutadiene diols and hydrogenated polybutadiene diols are used for producing thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers, hydrolytically stable PU elastomers, adhesives, sealants, coatings, encapsulation and electrical insulation polyurethanic products. 

Thus, from high MW diols (MW = 1000-4000 daltons) polyethers (polyalkyleneoxides, polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF)), polyesters, polycarbonates (PC), polybutadienes, etc., by the reaction with diisocyanates [toluene diisocyanate (TDI), or pure diphenyl methane diisocyanate (MDI)], high MW linear polyurethanes are obtained (no crosslinking), with high elasticity (polyurethane elastomers, spandex fibres, some adhesives and sealants, etc).

Polyurethanes continue to be one of the most versatile of all polymers, finding applications in foams (flexible, rigid, and in-between), elastomers, coatings, sealants, adhesives, paints, textiles, and films. This volume presents some of the major advances in polyurethanes, both from the materials and research side of things as well as processing and applications, and includes studies on foams (additives, vacuum panel applications, blowing and processing), elastomers, adhesion behaviour and new urethane raw materials. 

To evaluate this conclusion, it is necessary to consider the molecular mobility and adhesion strength of the filled polyurethane elastomer according to the concentration of modified filler.
