Polyurethanes Filled

Pleural pressure is measured chronically in conscious rats by surgically implanting a fluid-filled polyurethane catheter (length = 10 cm O.D. = 0.7 mm) attached to a pressure-sensitive radiotelemetry transmitter (Model TA11PA-C40, Data Sciences International, St. Paul, MN) beneath the serosal layer of the esophagus and within the thoracic cavity (see Figure 3).

The effects described here are not unique to carbon black filled rubbers. For example, the work of Schwarzl and assotiates (173) on a sodium chloride filled polyurethane, a model system for solid propellant formulations, shows many similarities to the behavior of carbon black reinforced rubber. 

The highly filled polyurethane joints that were studied are described in Fig. 24.8 [20]. The polymer chains on both sides of the interface are hydroxytelechelic poly butadiene chains (HTPBs). On the one hand, we have PUg in which the main additives are diisocyanate (isophorone diisocyanate) and 80% of reinforcing fillers (aluminum and potassium chloride). On the other hand, PUa contains the same diisocyanate and only 20% of reinforcing filler (carbon black).

To evaluate this conclusion, it is necessary to consider the molecular mobility and adhesion strength of the filled polyurethane elastomer according to the concentration of modified filler.

Polyurethane elastomers containing ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) as flllers show improved abrasion resistance. The UHMWPE is dispersed in the polyol in the formation of the filled polyurethanes. Commercial uses include gears, rollers, bushings, and mining screens. 

Recently, prototype molds are being fabricated from particle-filled polyurethane and epoxy syntactic foams using computer-aided multiaxis routers. Plugs, used to mechanically prestretch polymer sheet, are also usually machined from syntactic foams. For certain pol5miers, heated aluminum plugs or solid nylon plugs are desired.
