It is extremely important to assure the durability of the strengthening applied by the use of a protection layer on the external surface of the support. The tendency of aliphatic ethers toward oxidation requires the use of antioxidants such as hindered phenoHcs (eg, BHT), secondary aromatic amines, and phosphites. This is especially tme in polyether polyols used in making polyurethanes (PUR) because they may become discolored and the increase in acid number affects PUR production. The antioxidants also reduce oxidation during PUR production where the temperature could reach 230°C. Whilst the aliphatic nylons are generally classified as being impact resistant, they are affected by stress concentrators like sharp comers which may lead to brittle failures. Incorporation of mbbers which are not soluble in the nylons and hence form dispersions of rubber droplets in the polyamide matrix but which nevertheless can have some interaction between mbber and polyamide can be most effective. Materials described in the literature include the ethylene-propylene rubbers, ionomers (q.v.), polyurethanes, acrylates and methacrylates, ABS polymers and polyamides from dimer acid. [Pg.498]

This tri-isocyanate is reported to impart good light stability and weather resistanee in polyurethane eoatings and is probably the most widely used aliphatic isocyanate. A number of other aliphatic polyisocyanates have been introduced recently in attempts to produce polyurethanes with improved light stability. Amine derivatives of diphenylmethane are made by reacting aniline of toluidines with formaldehyde. These can lead to a mixture of di-isoeyanates, the diphenylmethane di-isocyanates (MDIs) of commerce. Triphenylmethane-pp p"-tny tri-isocyanate is produced from leucorosaniline. [Pg.781]

Nearly all of the polymers produced by step-growth polymerization contain heteroatoms and/or aromatic rings in the backbone. One exception is polymers produced from acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization.22 Hydrocarbon polymers with carbon-carbon double bonds are readily produced using ADMET polymerization techniques. Polyesters, polycarbonates, polyamides, and polyurethanes can be produced from aliphatic monomers with appropriate functional groups (Fig. 1.1). Example 5. Glycolysis of Polyurethanes with Propylene Oxide after Pretreatment with Ethanolamine.55 A rigid polyurethane foam (ca. 100 g) was dissolved in 30 g ethanolamine by heating. Excess ethanolamine was stripped, leaving a clear solution. Infrared and GPC analysis indicated that the clear solution obtained contained some residual polyurethane, aromatic polyurea, aliphatic polyols, aromatic amines, and N,N -bis(f -hydroxyethyljurea. Next the mixture was dissolved in 45 g propylene oxide and heated at 120°C in an autoclave for 2 h. The pressure increased to 40 psi and then fell to 30 psi at the end of the 2-h heating period.
