High-conversion polymerization

When solid monomers of acrylamide (AM) and methacrylamide (MAM) were subjected to plasma initiation, only trace amounts of insoluble polymers were obtained. Now if aqueous solutions of AM and MAM were used in the plasma initiated polymerization high conversions were again achievable upon post-polymerization. Polyacrylamide was found to be completely soluble, whereas polymethacrylamide forms a gel. The measured pressure-time curves have been combined with the conversion-pressure curves calculated by either the SAFT-LKP or the SAFT-PR model as described in Section 8.4.2.2 to yield the conversion as a function of time (see, e.g., Fig. 8.10 b) [9]. The shape of the conversion-versus-time curves of all polymerizations is similar. At the start of the polymerization, high conversion rates were observed which gradually decrease. The reaction rate does not become zero, which indicates that the catalyst is still active at the end of the experiment. During emulsion polymerization induced by ultrasound, the redundancy of initiator is advantageous in terms of process control and safety. Moreover, initiator residues do not contaminate the product. In contrast to ultrasound-induced bulk polymerizations, high conversions can be obtained in ultrasound-induced emulsion polymerization [154, 155]. Throughout this section we have used mostly p and u to describe the distribution of molecular weights. It should be remembered that these quantities are defined in terms of various concentrations and therefore change as the reactions proceed. Accordingly, the results presented here are most simply applied at the start of the polymerization reaction when the initial concentrations of monomer and initiator can be used to evaluate p or u. The termination constants are known to decrease with the extent of conversion of monomer to polymer, and this effect also complicates the picture at high conversions. If a linear mbber is used as a feedstock for the mass process (85), the mbber becomes insoluble in the mixture of monomers and SAN polymer which is formed in the reactors, and discrete mbber particles are formed. This is referred to as phase inversion since the continuous phase shifts from mbber to SAN. Grafting of some of the SAN onto the mbber particles occurs as in the emulsion process. Typically, the mass-produced mbber particles are larger (0.5 to 5 llm) than those of emulsion-based ABS (0.1 to 1 llm) and contain much larger internal occlusions of SAN polymer. The reaction recipe can include polymerization initiators, chain-transfer agents, and other additives. Diluents are sometimes used to reduce the viscosity of the monomer and polymer mixture to faciUtate processing at high conversion. The product from the reactor system is devolatilized to remove the unreacted monomers and is then pelletized. Equipment used for devolatilization includes single- and twin-screw extmders, and flash and thin film evaporators. Unreacted monomers are recovered for recycle to the reactors to improve the process yield. [Pg.204]

Wheieas the BPO—DMA ledox system works well for curing of unsaturated polyester blends, it is not a very effective system for initiating vinyl monomer polymerizations, and therefore it generally is not used in such appHcations (34). However, combinations of amines (eg, DMA) and acyl sulfonyl peroxides (eg, ACSP) are very effective initiator systems at 0°C for high conversion suspension polymerizations of vinyl chloride (35). BPO has also been used in combination with ferrous ammonium sulfate to initiate emulsion polymerizations of vinyl monomers via a redox reaction (36). [Pg.224]

Initia.tors, The initiators most commonly used in emulsion polymerization are water soluble although partially soluble and oil-soluble initiators have also been used (57). Normally only one initiator type is used for a given polymerization. In some cases a finishing initiator is used (58). At high conversion the concentration of monomer in the aqueous phase is very low, leading to much radical—radical termination. An oil-soluble initiator makes its way more readily into the polymer particles, promoting conversion of monomer to polymer more effectively. [Pg.25]

Bulk Polymerization. This is the method of choice for the manufacture of poly(methyl methacrylate) sheets, rods, and tubes, and molding and extmsion compounds. In methyl methacrylate bulk polymerization, an auto acceleration is observed beginning at 20—50% conversion. At this point, there is also a corresponding increase in the molecular weight of the polymer formed. This acceleration, which continues up to high conversion, is known as the Trommsdorff effect, and is attributed to the increase in viscosity of the mixture to such an extent that the diffusion rate, and therefore the termination reaction of the growing radicals, is reduced. This reduced termination rate ultimately results in a polymerization rate that is limited only by the diffusion rate of the monomer. Detailed kinetic data on the bulk polymerization of methyl methacrylate can be found in Reference 42. [Pg.265]

Butadiene copolymers are mainly prepared to yield mbbers (see Styrene-butadiene rubber). Many commercially significant latex paints are based on styrene—butadiene copolymers (see Coatings Paint). In latex paint the weight ratio S B is usually 60 40 with high conversion. Most of the block copolymers prepared by anionic catalysts, eg, butyUithium, are also elastomers. However, some of these block copolymers are thermoplastic mbbers, which behave like cross-linked mbbers at room temperature but show regular thermoplastic flow at elevated temperatures (45,46). Diblock (styrene—butadiene (SB)) and triblock (styrene—butadiene—styrene (SBS)) copolymers are commercially available. Typically, they are blended with PS to achieve a desirable property, eg, improved clarity/flexibiHty (see Polymerblends) (46). These block copolymers represent a class of new and interesting polymeric materials (47,48). Of particular interest are their morphologies (49—52), solution properties (53,54), and mechanical behavior (55,56). [Pg.507]

Bead Polymerization Bulk reaction proceeds in independent droplets of 10 to 1,000 [Lm diameter suspended in water or other medium and insulated from each other by some colloid. A typical suspending agent is polyvinyl alcohol dissolved in water. The polymerization can be done to high conversion. Temperature control is easy because of the moderating thermal effect of the water and its low viscosity. The suspensions sometimes are unstable and agitation may be critical. Only batch reaciors appear to be in industrial use polyvinyl acetate in methanol, copolymers of acrylates and methacrylates, polyacrylonitrile in aqueous ZnCh solution, and others. To maintain a high polymerization rate at high conversions, reduce the residual amount of the monomer, and eliminate the adverse process of polyacrylamide structurization, polymerization is carried out in the adiabatic mode. An increase in temperature in the reaction mixture due to the heat evolved in the process of polymerization is conductive to a reduction of the system viscosity even though the polymer concentration in it rises. The existence of an azeotropic composition has some practical significance. The primary aim of most studies on Lewis acid controlled copolymerization has been the elucidation of mechanism and only low conversion polymerizations are reported. Sherrington et al.m studied the high conversion synthesis of alternating MMA-S copolymers in the presence of Lewis acids on a preparative scale. Many Lewis acids were found lo give poor control (i.e. deviation from 50 50 composition) and were further complicated by side reactions including cross-linking. They found that the use of catalytic BCI- as the Lewis acid and photoinitiation gave best results. [Pg.436]
