This type of adhesive is generally useful in the temperature range where the material is either leathery or mbbery, ie, between the glass-transition temperature and the melt temperature. Hot-melt adhesives are based on thermoplastic polymers that may be compounded or uncompounded ethylene—vinyl acetate copolymers, paraffin waxes, polypropylene, phenoxy resins, styrene—butadiene copolymers, ethylene—ethyl acrylate copolymers, and low, and low density polypropylene are used in the compounded state polyesters, polyamides, and polyurethanes are used in the mosdy uncompounded state. [Pg.235]

Styrenic block copolymers (SBCs) are also widely used in HMA and PSA appHcations. Most hot melt appHed pressure sensitive adhesives are based on triblock copolymers consisting of SIS or SBS combinations (S = styrene, I = isoprene B = butadiene). Pressure sensitive adhesives typically employ low styrene, high molecular weight SIS polymers while hot melt adhesives usually use higher styrene, lower molecular weight SBCs. Resins compatible with the mid-block of an SBC improves tack properties those compatible with the end blocks control melt viscosity and temperature performance. [Pg.358]

Whilst approximately twice the raw material cost of TPO- and S-B-S-type polymers, thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers find applications where abrasion resistance and toughness are particular requirements. Pressure-sensitive adhesives Pressure-sensitive adhesions are actually viscous polymer melts at room temperature. The polymers must be applied at temperatures above their Tg to permit rapid flow. The adhesive is made to flow by application of pressure. When the pressure is removed, the viscosity of the polymer is sufficient to hold and adhere to the surface. Many tapes are of this type where the back is smooth and coated with a nonpolar coating so as not to bond with the sticky surface. The usefulness of piperazine and its derivatives for the preparation of polyamides has been known for some time, and it is one of the few disecondary diamines which can be employed to prepare high-melting polycondensates. Piperazine polyamides are especially useful as hot melt adhesives (68USP3377303), since they display unusually good adhesion to vinyl-based polymers such as poly(vinyl chloride).
