The importance of the [R-COO j as a preferred reaction pathway in the decomposition of pollutants on the surface [polyethylene-COO -Fe " ] is rationalized by the observation that these copolymer thin films should be attacked by Off, H02° and other oxidative radicals available in solution. But this was not the case for [polyethylene-COO -Fe ] even when used over long times (300 hours) and repeated recycling below the polyethylene flowing temperature (80°C). Moreover, the observation reported recently [8] that degradation of organic compounds is able to take place during Fenton photo-assisted treatment in the presence of 3000 ppm of Cl -ion... [Pg.1086]

Zeolite X was also examined for the decomposition of polyethylene in a series of articles by Ayame and co-workers.Using both a batch reactor and a fixed bed tubular flow reactor, the rate of conversion of polyethylene was enhanced in the presence of CaX and NaX. Deactivation was observed in the flow studies, as the rate of formation of gaseous products decreased by a factor of three after 2.5 hours time on stream when the reaction was carried out at 750 K with 4.0 g of catalyst and a polyethylene flow rate of 7.23 x 10 g min . When a CaX catalyst was used, C4 species were observed in the highest yield. In the batch reaction, the yield of iso-C4 species was increased dramatically compared with thermal degradation, as thermal degradation afforded no iso-C4. [Pg.130]

The method of choice for the determination of these quantities on HDPE resin is gel permeation chromatography. In this chromatographic method a solvent with the dissolved polyethylene flows through a column filled with a porous material. It is usually a gel of cross-linked polymers. Depending upon the size of the polyethylene coils in the solution, they can fit to the pores of the gel, stick there and block them whereby the transport is retarded. Larger polyethylene chains are transported unhindered with the solvent flow. Thus a size-dependent retardation occurs which justifies the other term size exclusion chromatography (SEC). In the chromatogram, which shows polymer concentration (determined for example via optical measurements (refractive index)) as a function of time, the time coordinate corresponds to a polymer molecular mass coordinate and the concentration... [Pg.122]

Figure 12 Two typical pressure traces from a polyethylene flow curve at 190°C, one with an increasing shear rate profile and one with decreasing rates. Each time the pressure levels off, the instrument saves the point and changes the piston speed to move to the next shear rate. The resulting flow curve is similar to Fig. 14. Molten polyethylene flowing in a heavily insulated tube is at a pressure of 3.48 X 10 N/m prior to entering a series of in-line static mixing units. After leaving the mixers, the polymer is at a pressure of 6.96 X 10 N/m and a temperature of 170 C. What was the temperature of the polymer before it entered the static mixers ... [Pg.103]

Pressure drop data for polyethylene flowing in various capillaries are given below as a function of shear rate. [Pg.137]

The EIA system was equipped with a peristaltic pump and a polyethylene flow cell (10 mmx 4 mm i.d.). They were connected with a polyethylene tube (1.0 mm i.d.). The volume from the end of the tube to the entrance to the flow cell was 0.80 mL. A metallized reflector (4 mm X 10 mm) was mounted in the flow cell and the common end of the fiberoptic bundle was placed perpendicular to the flow cell opposite the reflector. The gap between the fiberoptic bundle and the polyethylene was filled with cementing agent containing the epoxy resin for sealing the flow cell. [Pg.490]

The spring ensures a soHd closing action and is usually wound from stainless steel wire. The dip tube conducts the product from the container to the valve. It is usually extmded from polyethylene or polypropylene and has an inside diameter of over 2.54 mm, although it can be provided in capillary sizes having diameters down to 0.25 mm. These small tubes are used to reduce flow rate and may function in place of the Hquid metering orifice in the valve housing. [Pg.350]

Phosphoms-containing additives can act in some cases by catalyzing thermal breakdown of the polymer melt, reducing viscosity and favoring the flow or drip of molten polymer from the combustion zone (25). On the other hand, red phosphoms [7723-14-0] has been shown to retard the nonoxidative pyrolysis of polyethylene (a radical scission). For that reason, the scavenging of radicals in the condensed phase has been proposed as one of several modes of action of red phosphoms (26). [Pg.475]

Many initiators attack steels of the AISI 4300 series and the barrels of the intensifiers, which are usually of compound constmction to resist fatigue, have an inner liner of AISI 410 or austenitic stainless steel. The associated small bore pipework and fittings used to transfer the initiator to the sparger are usually made of cold worked austenitic stainless steel. The required pumping capacity varies considerably from one process to another, but an initiator flow rate 0.5 L / min is more than sufficient to supply a single injection point in a reactor nominally rated for 40 t/d of polyethylene. [Pg.99]

Triisopropan olamine is used in natural mbber cross-linking and as a color stabilizer for polyethylene formulations. Chain termination of polybutadiene with triisopropan olamine gives improved cold-flow properties. [Pg.11]

Manufacture is either by reaction of molten sodium with methyl alcohol or by the reaction of methyl alcohol with sodium amalgam obtained from the electrolysis of brine in a Castner mercury cell (78). Both these methods produce a solution of sodium methylate in methanol and the product is offered in two forms a 30% solution in methanol, and a soHd, which is a dry, free-flowing white powder obtained by evaporating the methanol. The direct production of dry sodium methylate has been carried out by the introduction of methanol vapors to molten sodium in a heavy duty agitating reactor. The sohd is supphed in polyethylene bags contained in airtight dmms filled in a nitrogen atmosphere. [Pg.26]
