A large variety of newer poly(ether imide)s has been described. Included among these are perfluorinated polymers (96), poly(ester ether imide)s (97), poly(ether imide)s derived from A/,Ar-diamino-l,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxyHcbisimide (98), and poly(arylene ether imide ketone)s (99). In addition, many other heterocyHc groups have been introduced into polyether systems, eg, poly(pyrazole ether)s (100) and poly(aryl ether phenylquinoxaLine)s (101) poly(aryl ether oxazole)s with trifluoromethyl groups (102) and polyethers with other heterolinkages, eg, poly(arylether azine)s (103). [Pg.334]

THE can be polymerized by many strongly acidic catalysts, but not all of them produce the requked bitimctional polyether glycol with a minimum of by-products. Several large-scale commercial polymerization processes are based on fluorosulfonic acid, HESO, catalysis, which meets all these requkements. The catalyst is added to THE at low temperatures and an exothermic polymerization occurs readily. The possibility exists that the acid used in hydrolysis could catalyze the hydrolysis of the succinic ester group in the middle of the telechelomer itself. Even though NMR ( H and C) cannot easily eliminate this possibility, we have evidence that such a hydrolysis did not take place. Short blocks of methyl methacrylate are very difficult to hydrolyze, but can be cleaved with reagents such as lithium iodide and potassium trimethylsilanolate. Strictly speaking, the term polyester ought to refer to a chemical compound containing many ester groups in each molecule. In practice, however, it usually refers to polymeric materials containing ester groups as major structural components of the main chains of the macromolecules of which the polymer is composed, and this is the sense in which it is used here. The term is not now usually applied to polymers that contain ester groups attached to the main chain either directly, as in cellulose triacetate, poly(vinyl acetate) or poly(methyl acrylate), or within short side-chains. [Pg.4]
