Pleasant taste

The anti-inflammatory agent Oxapro2in, 2-(4,5-diphenyl-2-oxa2ole)propionic acid mono aluminum and dihydroxyalurninum salts, is made by reaction of the sodium salt with aluminum sulfate under controlled conditions (96). Again, the aluminum salts of many carboxylic acid based dmgs are less irritating, ulcerous, and/or toxic, and have a more pleasant taste than their parent acids. [Pg.144]

Both elder flowers and elderberries can be used as teas, tinctures, syrups and tablets for children for colds, sniffles and fever. The syrup is especially effective to lessen the severity of an oncoming flu. It is pleasant -tasting and most children like it. Avoid giving anything with honey to children under one year of age. [Pg.46]

Elder by itself is pleasant-tasting and even children enjoy drinking it, but it is often combined with other herbs. [Pg.58]

The texture of ice cream is an important quality factor to consumers. What is the chemical basis for the gritty or sandy-like texture that detracts from ice cream s pleasant taste ... [Pg.197]

No reports of human death after ingesting 1,4-dichlorobenzene have been reported however, there is some concern that ingestion of 1,4-dichlorobenzene could result in human mortality based on two factors. First, 1,4-dichlorobenzene is used in many homes in the form of consumer products such as mothballs and toilet bowl deodorant blocks. Because of its availability in the form of mothballs and its pleasant taste, 1,4-dichlorobenzene can be accidentally ingested by young children. Secondly, a 19-year-old woman ingested 4-5 pellets of 1,4-dichlorobenzene daily for about 2.5 years (Frank and Cohen 1961) in another case a 21-year-old woman consumed one or two 1,4-dichlorobenzene toilet bowl deodorizer blocks per week throughout her pregnancy (Campbell and Davidson 1970). Thus, based on its... [Pg.125]

Not long after this meeting with Benjamin Franklin, Priestley accepted a pastorate at Leeds. Since the parsonage happened to be located next door to the Jakes and Nell Brewery, the Reverend Mr. Priestley had a convenient source of fixed air for his experiments. He soon discovered the pleasant taste of water charged with this gas, and recommended the refreshing beverage to his friends. Dr. William Brown-rigg had previously made the same discovery (22, 47). [Pg.214]

Should have pleasant taste and odour and having sufficient cleansing property. [Pg.419]

The two azoles most commonly used topically are clotrimazole and miconazole several others are available (see Preparations Available). Both are available over-the-counter and are often used for vulvovaginal candidiasis. Oral clotrimazole troches are available for treatment of oral thrush and are a pleasant-tasting alternative to nystatin. In cream form, both agents are useful for dermatophytic infections, including tinea corporis, tinea pedis, and tinea cruris. Absorption is negligible, and adverse effects are rare. [Pg.1063]

Enological techniques have developed over the past 10-20 years so that it is possible now for the commercial-scale winery to ensure the biological stability in the bottle of young sweet table wines. This has made possible the production and marketing of inexpensive sweet white table wines and the introduction of balanced, pleasant-tasting, low-sugar reds as well. It has led further to the introduction of the very sweet Concord or berry-flavored red table wines and to the development of a host of sweet wines of various colors specially flavored with mixtures of extracts of fruits, berries, and herbs. [Pg.303]

Many coumarins are found in plants and a comprehensive review is available (78FOR(35)i99). Coumarin has a pleasant taste and odour and was used for flavouring until its toxic action on the liver was discovered. Among other coumarins which have toxic effects on mammals are a group called aflatoxins, e.g. aflatoxin Gi, (221), which are secondary metabolites of fungi of the Aspergillus genus. Some of these compounds have been present in animal feeds and caused deaths of the animals. In contrast, other coumarin derivatives,... [Pg.676]

Mastic is a hard resin exuding from the branches of one of the Pistachio trees, Pistncin lentiscus, native of Mediterranean F.nrope and southern Asia. Formerly, it was extensively used medicinally, for stomach troubles and dysentery, as well as other ailments.. Now it is used in making varnishes and in lithographic work. Natives of the region in which it is found chew mastic, which has a pleasant taste. [Pg.1438]

Soft drinks are low-pH beverages that are based mostly around fruit-derived ingredients or incorporate fruit flavours. They are an important source of hydration but are usually selected on the basis of pleasant taste and convenience of use. There are some soft drinks, of which cola-flavoured beverages are the most prominent, which do not rely primarily on fruit flavours. Some of these nonfruit-flavoured products are almost invariably produced only in a carbonated form, whereas others, such as peppermint, almost always appear only in dilutable and non-carbonated form. [Pg.129]

Objective Characters.—Note is made if the milk has the normal pleasant taste and smell if it is bitter, add, soapy, salty (altered) if it has the normal opaque white colour and is not yellowish, reddish or bluish (altered). Its reaction to litmus paper should be amphoteric. [Pg.22]

Citrus fruits and their products are now recognized as an important food in the human diet, not only because of their vitamin C contents, but also because of their other food attributes, such as their pleasant aroma, appealing color, and pleasant taste of appropriate ratios of sweetness and tartness... [Pg.4]

The color range and aromas attainable by varying the times and temperature of roasting, the powdery bulk, complete compatibility with cocoa, its GRAS status, and its price ( 0.60/lb.) give it an initial advantage as a cocoa extender. But it certainly doesn t taste like cocoa, although it is sweet and has a rather pleasant taste. [Pg.307]

Frequently, simple carbohydrates are considered as a source for sweet pleasant tastes, and complex carbohydrates, such as starch, as thickeners. In actuality, both simple and complex carbohydrates can be heat processed either in the dry or liquid state, alone or in combination with other reactants, to produce a vast array of aromas and flavors. Thus, carbohydrates serve as flavor precursors/components in the commercial formulation of processed foods. [Pg.32]

Cashew kernels possess pleasant taste and flavor and are eaten either raw or roasted with salt. The raw nuts, which are packed in flexible packages, are usually marketed as plain cashews. The roasted nuts are usually fried in vegetable oil to light brown colour, salted and packed in cans. The flavor characteristics of plain cashew nuts are enhanced as a result of oil roasting. A literature review revealed that the flavor constituents of plain or roasted cashew nuts have not been investigated previously. In the present study, the authors have attempted to isolate the flavor compounds by steam distillation and extraction and to identify them by GC and GC-MS techniques. Thirty six compounds have been identified for the first time. [Pg.356]

Vanillin forms white to slightly yellow needle like crystals, which have a very pleasant taste and odor. The crystals are slowly oxidized on exposure to air and light, and should be stored in airtight amber glass bottles. The crystals have a melting point of 80 to 81 Celsius, and a boiling point of 285 Celsius with some possible decomposition. The crystals are not very soluble in water, but are freely soluble in alcohol, chloroform, and most common solvents. Vanillin is one of the major compounds responsible for the characteristic taste of vanilla. [Pg.19]

Ethyl acetate is a clear, volatile, and flammable liquid with a pleasant, fruity odor. It has a pleasant taste when diluted. Ethyl acetate slowly decomposes by moisture, so it should be kept in air-tight bottles and in a cool dry place. It has a boiling point of 77 Celsius, and a melting point of-83 Celsius. Ethyl acetate is moderately soluble in water (1 milliliter in 10 milliliters of water), but is miscible with alcohol, acetone, chloroform, and ether. It forms a azeotropic mixture with water (6% by weight with a boiling point of 70 Celsius). Ethyl acetate can be prepared by distilling a mixture of ethanol and acetic acid in the presence of a few drops of sulfuric acid. Ethyl acetate is a valuable solvent for many chemical reactions. [Pg.75]

Terpenes are a diverse family of compounds with carbon skeletons composed of five-carbon isopentyl (isoprene) units. Terpenes are commonly isolated from the essential oils of plants the fragrant oils that are concentrated from plant material by steam distillation. The term essential oils literally means oils derived from the essence of plants. They often have pleasant tastes or aromas, and they are widely used as flavorings, deodorants, and medicines. Figure 25-12 shows the structures of four terpenes that are isolated from essential oils. [Pg.1215]
