Plastics current applications

Because of low prices and steadily rising performance on the part of technical and standard plastics, the application of natural fibers came to a near halt. The current critical discussion about preservation of natural resources and recycling led to a reflection about natural materials, the focus centuring on regrowing raw materials [2]. 

Agricultural mulching film is one of the typical applications for biodegradable plastics. Currently, Bionolle mulching film is commonly used in Japan, and is an important market for us. However, some farmers are anxious about the effects of repeated use of biodegradable plastic on the farm. We, as a manufacturer of Bionolle, need to accumulate knowledge on such usage in the farm. 

Current applications of CFRP (Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics) at Alenia Spazio include optical benches (Figure 6, following page), truss adapters (Figure 7, following page) and spectrometer frames. 

Due to the exceptional properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), such as high electrical and thermal conductivity and excellent mechanical properties, they are expected to have great potential as fillers for polymeric matrices. CNTs are incorporated in electrically insulating polymer materials to achieve electrostatic dissipative behavior or electrical conductivity and improved mechanical properties. Three applications of polypropylene in the modem family car are given in Section 8.2.2. By referring to the literature, compile a more complete list of current applications of polypropylene polymers and copolymers in automobiles, and suggest hirther possible applications. Where PP is used in competition with metals or other plastics for the same type of component, summarize the respective advantages and disadvantages.

Thus, the use of plastics in fuel systems has grown in recent years. While the largest application of plastics is fuel tanks, many other current applications include fasteners, connectors, radiator end caps, fuel vapor canisters, and fuel rails. 

Chapter 5 discusses in detail the current application of recycled PET. In particular, the applications of recycled PET are discussed in the fields of food packaging, construction, textile industry, injection moulding and other manufacturing processes, wood-plastic composites and so on. On the other hand. Chapter 6 describes the optical properties of polyolefins upon recycling. Optical properties of different plastics play a key role in packaging applications, so this chapter primarily focuses on the different structural aspects and properties of isotactic polypropylene. 

Plastics are the most commonly used materials for packaging applications because of low cost, easy process ability and the availability of abundant resources for their production. The world wide annual production of plastics continues to increase at a steady rate every year and is expected to cross the 300milUon ton mark by the year 2015 (Chen and Patel, 2012). Plastics find applications in a wide variety of segments such as packaging, building and constmction, automotive applications, electrical and electronics applications, aerospace applications, and corrosion prevention, and control. Currently the packaging sector accounts for over 40% of the total worldwide plastics consumption (Silvestre et al., 2011). 

Many current applications of plastics and their associated benefits follow those outlined in the 1940s by Yarsley and Couzens (1945). Their account of the benefits that plastics would bring to a person born 70 years ago, at the beginning of our plastic age , contained much optimism ... 

In terms of tonnage, poly(vinyl chloride) is (with polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene) one of the four most important plastics currently in use. It is extremely widely used in such applications as bottles, building accessories, cable insulation, flooring, packaging film and pipe.
