Access of air and water will also affect the corrosion rate. Metal inserts in corrosive plastics are most actively attacked at the plastic/metal/air interfaces with certain metals, notably aluminium titaniumand stainless steel, crevice effects (oxygen shielding and entrapment of water) frequently accelerate attack. Acceleration of corrosion by bimetallic couples between carbon-fibre-reinforced plastics and metals presents a problem in the use of these composites. [Pg.955]

While plastics processing has been of minor importance for today s production of the internal combustion engine and its respective drive system, this sector will become highly relevant if hydrogen is stored on board. A thin-walled aluminium storage sheeted by a carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic has been assumed for the above-shown structural changes in industry. [Pg.374]

In recent years, several designs of rotor made from carbon-fibre reinforced plastic have come on to the market, combining strength, lightness and some resistance to chemical corrosion. Most rotors, however, are made of aluminium or titanium alloy. [Pg.143]

A summary of quasi-static delamination test methods for continuous-fibre, unidirectional FRP composites is given in Table 8.1. For mode 1, several standard test methods exist, namely, JIS K7086 ( Testing methods for interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fibre reinforced plastics , 1993) this also includes a quasi-static mode 11 standard test, ASTM... [Pg.196]

Most carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) used and investigated to date are produced from preimpregnated continuous carbon fibre prepregs. Polymers reinforced with aligned short carbon fibres have certain advantages as materials for structural components, because they can easily be formed into complicated shapes with satisfactory mechanical properties. Woven fabrics produced from carbon fibres find increasing application in the aerospace and many other industries, because they are easy to handle, they have the ability to conform to complicated shapes and the in-plane properties are more isotropic than those of equivalent unidirectional materials. [Pg.162]

Blistering has been associated with galvanic corrosion adjacent to the light glass-weft fibre in unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced plastics (see Section 7.9). [Pg.235]

Another example given by Meier et al [21] was related to the reinforcement of the City Hall of Gossau. Here a hole had to be cut in a concrete slab to accommodate an elevator. It was reported that the edges of the hole were strengthened with carbon fibre reinforced plastics sheets instead of thick steel plates. This helps retain the aesthetics of the building and after painting, the presence of carbon fibre reinforced plastic sheets was completely disguised. [Pg.332]
