Plastics additives coupling agents

Various additives and fillers may be employed. Calcium carbonate, talc, carbon black, titanium dioxide, and wollastonite are commonly used as fillers. Plasticizers are often utilized also. Plasticizers may reduce viscosity and may help adhesion to certain substrates. Thixotropes such as fumed silica, structured clays, precipitated silica, PVC powder, etc. can be added. Adhesion promoters, such as silane coupling agents, may also be used in the formulation [69]. 

Clear impact-resistant polystyrene is a commercial plastic with the desirable combination of toughness and exceptional clarity. It is a styrene-1,3-butadiene multiblock copolymer containing more than 60% styrene. Most of these products are mixtures of block copolymers formed by incremental additions of initiator and monomers followed by coupling (Sec. 5-4c). The products generally have a tapered and multiblock composition with branching (due to the coupling agent). 

In addition, ABS that has been recovered can be recycled into high value composites without separation from impurities. This has been exemplified with wood-plastic composites that contain ABS as matrix polymer. Both virgin ABS and recycled ABS were used and the properties of the materials were compared (126). In order to increase the performance, coupling agents were used, all based on grafted maleic anhydride.

Eigures in Table 7.35 does not reflect a shape of the composite board, size of pro-hle (solid or hollow), but just the formulation—type and amount of plastic, type and amount of hllers, coupling agents, other additives, and so on. It should be noted here that only one tested board had the lowest both flex strength and flex modulus from the whole series of boards. The strongest board was not the stiffest one, and generally, there was no any correlation between flex strength and modulus of these boards.
