The crystalline plastics (basic polymers) tend to have their molecules arranged in a relatively regular repeating structure such as polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). This behavior identifies its morphology that is the study of the physical form or structure of a material. They are usually translucent or opaque and generally have higher softening points than the amorphous plastics. They can be made transparent with chemical modification. Since commercially perfect crystalline polymers are not produced, they are identified technically as semicrystalline TPs. The crystalline TPs normally has up to 80% crystalline structure and the rest is amorphous. [Pg.4]

ISO 1663 is a method specifically designed for cellular plastics. Basically it is similar in principle to ASTM E 96. Most resins that are processed require some type of fillers and/or reinforcements in order to function. Typical fillers and reinforcements are listed in Table 6-1, which shows the properties they influence. (See Chapter 7 for details on reinforced plastics.) Basically fillers and pigments are added in molding resins to reduce shrinkage, minimize crazing, lower the material cost, impart color or opacity, improve the surface finish, and so on. The most commonly used fillers are calcium carbonates, diatomaceous earths, and clays. The excessive use of fillers should be avoided, as the fluidity of the resin can be reduced to the point where it is difficult to process. [Pg.234]
