TrimeUitic anhydride is converted to PVC plasticizers, polyesters, water-soluble alkyd coatings, and polyamide—imide resias. The trimellitate plasticizers have a lower volatility than those derived from phthaUc anhydride (see Plasticizers). [Pg.510]

Well-known thermosetting plastics include the phenolics, urea-formaldehyde and melamine-formaldehyde plastics, polyesters and epoxides. [Pg.921]

Similar systems can be developed with polyester prepolymers with the addition of an ester-based plasticizer. Polyesters are very much tougher than polyether so they make better, softer materials. One commercial system uses a blend of a short-chain triol with either MOCA or Ethacure 300, with the addition of some plasticizer for the very softest material. The most-used triol is Isonol 93, which is now known as Conap AH50. [Pg.102]

Burning may be considered another means of oxidation. Non-burning plastics are a must in commercial constructions according to building codes and are often required for automotive, electronic, and electrical applications. From the numerous thermoplastics, only the halogen-containing polymers, polyamides, polycarbonate, poly(phenylene oxide), polysulfone, and polyimides are self-extinguishing. Even these, such as poly (vinyl chloride), may become flammable when plasticized with a flammable plasticizer. Fire control can be the key to volume use of plastics. Polyester panels, urethane foam, and PVC tarpaulins account for nearly 90% of all fire retardants consumed. Consumption in 1967... [Pg.13]

Triethylene glycol consumption is approximately 115 million lb/year in the United States. The major use, natural gas drying, depends on the low volatility and strong affinity of triethylene glycol for water. Lesser amounts are used as intermediate for vinyl plasticizers, polyester resins, and polyols. Additional direct applications include solvent and humectant uses. [Pg.357]

PCAs (typically medium carbon chain length compounds of 50 - 60 wt% Cl) are also used as secondary plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and in other plastics (polyesters, polyolefins, polystyrene) and rubbers (neoprene). PCAs can partially replace primary plasticizers such as phthalates and phosphate esters [21]. As plasticizers, PCAs lend flame retardancy to the product, unlike phthalate esters [5]. They are added prior to the processing step for the polymer. [Pg.208]

Fabricators and finishers. The large majority of companies are involved in the fabrication and finishing of polymer-containing products. Fabrication can be divided into three broad areas machining, forming, and fashioning. SEE ALSO Adhesives Fibers Nylons Plastics Polyesters Polymers, Natural. [Pg.1051]

One of the most important activities in chemistry is the synthesis of new compounds. Each of our lives has been greatly affected by synthetic compounds such as plastic, polyester, and aspirin. When a given compound is formed from simpler materials, we call this a synthesis (combination) reaction. [Pg.267]
