Plastic substrates, abrasion-resistant

Many of the attributes of solvent-borne epoxy coatings could be carried over to the waterborne epoxy coatings. These same attributes are useful in the application of waterborne epoxies as adhesive systems. They include good adhesion to a variety of substrates such as metals, wood, concrete, glass, ceramics, and many plastics chemical resistance low shrinkage toughness and flexibility and abrasion resistance. [Pg.265]

With the flexibility of the blown film extrusion process, one-step production of wide multilayer films is possible. Incorporating a built-in adhesive layer, PVDF films can be laminated directly onto various thermo and thermoset plastics or primed metal substrates. PVDF films can protect the esthetics of UV sensitive substrates while also providing a thermal, chemical, and abrasion-resistant barrier. Recently, white PVDF films have been commercialized that are of full opacity in the UV range of 290 00 Most recently,... [Pg.2387]

It is necessary to thermally cure the coated plastic in order to achieve full crosslinking of the air dried film. The degree of crosslinking affects not only the abrasion resistance of coating, but also the adhesion and the long term performance under environmental conditions. The temperature and time of cure is also dictated by the thermal stability and properties of the plastic substrate. The following table lists recommended cures for various plastics. [Pg.131]

Proposed applications include films for food packaging, making use of the reduced permeability feature of exfoliated montmorillonites. In the packaging industry, for instance, certain foods, (e.g. tomato products and beer) are sensitive to oxygen owing to the permeability of the plastic. The fire retardant property of these composites is also frequently mentioned (93). Other proposed applications include thin-walled medical tubing, abrasion-resistant and chemical-resistant coating, especially for transparent substrates. [Pg.736]

Recently there has been increased use of surface coating materials, i.e. printing inks, metallization, or painting, to enhance the appearance and surface-related properties of plastics (e.g. barrier properties to gases or UV radiation, or increased abrasion resistance). Usually such treatment is accompanied by pretreatment to modify the surface of the polymer and to ensure adhesion of the surface coating to the substrate. [Pg.7]

IT finishing systems have long used acrylic polyurethanes to provide a tough abrasion resistant finish to computers, telecommunication equipment, etc. The substrates are often plastic, but can also be steel or aluminium. The requirements for exterior durability are less stringent than in ACE, but abrasion resistance requirements are even higher, due to the greater amount of handling these components receive. [Pg.319]

The mechanical properties of coated plastic parts are largely determined through a combination of the paint formulation and the plastic substrate. When we refer to mechanical properties, we arc referring to properties such as hardness, flexibility, impact, solvent and abrasion resistance, and even adhesion. Schoff (29)... [Pg.171]
