The abihty of organically modified ceramics based on alumina, zkconia, titania, or siUca (and mixtures of each) to function as abrasion-resistant coatings has also been studied (62). Eor example, polycarbonate, when coated with an epoxy—aluminosihcate system, experiences a significant reduction in the degree of hazing induced by an abrader, as compared to uncoated polycarbonate. 

Thermal spray processes can be used to give coatings of chromium carbide or nickel chromium for erosion resistance, copper nickel indium for fretting resistance, tungsten carbide cobalt for wear and abrasion resistance, and even aluminum siHcon polyester mixtures for abradabiHty. 

The critical property for conformal coatings is resistance to chemicals, moisture, and abrasion. Other properties, such as the coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, flexibiHty, and modulus of elasticity, are significant only in particular appHcations. The dielectric constant and loss tangent of the conformal coating are important for high speed appHcations. 

Epoxies provide excellent chemical, moisture, and abrasion resistance. However, because a solvent can sometimes dissolve the epoxy present in the laminate, rework on an epoxy coating requires heat or abrasion to remove the coating. 

In general, polycarbonate resins have fair chemical resistance to aqueous solutions of acids or bases, as well as to fats and oils. Chemical attack by amines or ammonium hydroxide occurs, however, and aUphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons promote crazing of stressed molded samples. Eor these reasons, care must be exercised in the choice of solvents for painting and coating operations. Eor sheet appHcations, polycarbonate is commonly coated with a sihcone—sihcate hardcoat which provides abrasion resistance as well as increased solvent resistance. Coated films are also available. 

Gel coats are pigmented polyester coatings appHed to the mold surface and are an integral part of the finished laminate. Gel coats are used widely on hand lay-up and spray-up parts to enhance surface aesthetics and coloration as weU as to provide an abrasion-resistant waterproof surface that protects the underlying glass-reinforced stmcture. 

Uralkyds have superior adhesion, hardness, abrasion resistance, durabiHty, and chemical resistance to the unmodified alkyds. They find appHcations in wood floor finishes, marine coatings, metal primers, and maintenance paints. 

Plasma processing technologies ate used for surface treatments and coatings for plastics, elastomers, glasses, metals, ceramics, etc. Such treatments provide better wear characteristics, thermal stability, color, controlled electrical properties, lubricity, abrasion resistance, barrier properties, adhesion promotion, wettability, blood compatibility, and controlled light transmissivity. 

Zirconium oxide is fused with alurnina in electric-arc furnaces to make alumina—zirconia abrasive grains for use in grinding wheels, coated-abrasive disks, and belts (104) (see Abrasives). The addition of zirconia improves the shock resistance of brittle alurnina and toughens the abrasive. Most of the baddeleyite imported is used for this appHcation, as is zirconia produced by burning zirconium carbide nitride.
