Plants, symbolism

The plant symbolism suggests healing or transformation at a very basic, cellular level, nurtured by the light of the inner sun. It also calls to mind the Vegetative level of the nervous system, where our psychosomatic responses arise unconsciously. The absence of humans and other animals suggests that instinctual and intellectual activities have not fully revitalized in terms of action and will. The new growth even seems to be a different kind of plant, further suggesting life on a new basis. With this new attitude, illumination comes not only from outside and above but from the darkness within (lumen naturae). [Pg.153]

Potassium [7440-09-7] K, is the third, element ia the aLkaU metal series. The name designation for the element is derived from potash, a potassium mineral the symbol from the German name kalium, which comes from the Arabic qili, a plant. The ashes of these plants al qili) were the historical source of potash for preparing fertilisers (qv) or gun powder. Potassium ions, essential to plants and animals, play a key role in carbohydrate metaboHsm in plants. In animals, potassium ions promote glycolysis, Hpolysis, tissue respiration, and the synthesis of proteins (qv) and acetylcholine. Potassium ions are also beheved to function in regulating blood pressure. [Pg.515]

Plant-Performance Triangle This view of plant-performance analysis is depicted in Fig. 30-1 as a plant-performance triangle. Figure 30-2 provides a key to the symbols used. [Pg.2547]

Bums and Hazzan demonstrated tlie use of event tree and fault tree analysis in tlie study of a potential accident sequence leading to a toxic vapor release at an industrial chemical process plant. The initiator of tlie accident sequence studied is event P, the failure of a plant programmable automatic controller. Tliis event, in conjunction willi the success or failure of a process water system (a glycol cooling system) mid an operator-manual shutdown of tlie distillation system produced minor, moderate, or major release of toxic material as indicated in Fig. 21.4.1. The symbols W, G, O represent tlie events listed ... [Pg.618]

To aid in readability by plant management as well as engineering and operating personnel, it is important that a set of symbols be developed as somewhat standard for a particular plant or company. Of course, these can be improved and modified with time and as needed, but with the basic forms and letters established, the sheets can be quite valuable. Many companies consider their flowsheets quite confidential since they contain the majority of key processing information, even if in summary form. [Pg.17]

Many symbols are pictorial w hich is helpful in representing process as well as control and mechanical operations. In general, experience indicates that the better the representation including relative locating of connections, key controls and even udlity connections, and service systems, the more useful will be the flowsheets for detailed project engineering and plant design. [Pg.17]

The beginning of the industrial age saw a substantial increase in demand for basic materials and chemicals, and the chemical industry was established to satisfy these demands for high production volumes. The tall and impressive silhouettes of modern chemical plants dominate industrial estates, visible from afar as symbols for the vast capabilities and capacities of today s chemical industry. Without this industry and its equipment of enormous proportions, our economic wealth would be quite inconceivable. [Pg.679]

As is typical of process systems, the plant runs with a very high availability and product quality is normally maintained. For diagnostic data interpretation, there is very little data for developing any kind of numeric-symbolic interpreter that maps directly from the input data to the output diagnostic conclusions. It is possible, however, to map with a great deal of confidence from the input numeric data to a set of useful intermediate interpretations. With respect to the sensor data, there is considerable information for map-... [Pg.91]

The sequence of the main equipment items shown symbolically on the flow-sheet follows that of the proposed plant layout. Some licence must be exercised in the placing of ancillary items, such as heat exchangers and pumps, or the layout will be too congested. But the aim should be to show the flow of material from stage to stage as it will occur, and to give a general impression of the layout of the actual process plant. [Pg.139]

In the hydrolysis of fats, a small amount of water dissolves in the fat and reacts to form an acid and glycerine. Then the glycerine migrates to the water phase. The differential equation representing this process was derived and checked against a plant test by Jeffreys, Jenson Miles (Trans Instn Chem Engrs 29 389-396, 1961). Flow rates per unit cross section are L of the fat stream, G of the water stream.. Other symbols are,... [Pg.846]
