Plant-derived oils

In recent years, industrial research has created new opportunities for the use of new types of plant-derived oils in polyurethane applications [25]. In addition to the use of natural glycerin or sugars as a starter for conventional petrochemical polyols. 

Over the last 30 years, the paint industry has become almost completely dependent on materials manufactured from hydrocarbons. Paints made from plant-derived materials such as linseed oil are still produced but latex, epoxy, and urethane-based coatings are made from hydrocarbons. Most of the solvents used in formulating both (plant-derived) oil based and, synthetic paints are extracted or synthesized from hydrocarbons. In many cases the plant derived product, still in use, is reacted with hydrocarbon derived chemicals to improve the film strength, cut the drying time or alter the plant material in some other desirable manner.

Microbial lipid production has been known for more than a century however, the economics of microbial oil production utilizing yeasts and fungi could not compete with that of plant-derived oils for commodity products. In another series, replacing plant-derived oils with a fish oil-based emulsion in 130 children with cholestasis resulted in improvement [32 ]. 

Thus, the weight of current evidence suggests that fish oils may be preferable to plant-derived oils in children receiving parenteral nutrition.

Since the dawn of civilization, plant-derived oils have always played a key role in a man s life by providing essential nutrition. After thousands of years of domestication of oil plants, in today s modem world, (hey are approved for limited human consumption, and moreover, their application is expanding in many directions. Plant-derived oils are currently used not only as biolubricants but also as biofuels, which are cost-effective sustainable sources for renewable energy. 

Besides being used as animal feedstock, plant-derived oils are drawing attention as an alternative to marine oils to feed aqnacnlture and other farmed carnivores.
