Pigment extended

Transparent white pigments (extenders) commonly used in inks, in order of decreasing transparency, ate alumina hydrate, magnesium carbonate, calcium carbonate, blanc fixe (precipitated barium sulfate), talc, and clay. Extenders ate sometimes used to reduce the color strength and change the theology of inks. 

Industrial Fillers. Whiting is widely used ia paints as a filler and pigment extender. A high refiective white color is a requisite for paint. Both ultrafine and relatively coarse carbonate fillers ate iacorporated ia mbber products. The latter type of a nominal 0.074 mm (200 mesh) size is for iaexpensive mbber products.

Extender pigments are low-cost, generally colorless or white pigments with a refractive index less than 1.7. Sometimes diese pigments are also referred to as fillers. Many extenders are derived from natural sources and display many diverse properties. They are added to various formulations to improve technical and application properties and to reduce costs, Like pigments, extenders are dispersed in media in which they do not dissolve, but compared to pigments they do not have any significant coloristic properties. 

There are two main times during the processing of polyurethane where vacuum degassing may be required. The first is the prepolymer as supplied by the manufacturer. The second is after mixing the prepolymer with the rest of the system (curative, pigment, extenders, and fillers). 

Venetian red is a mixture of ferric oxide with up to an equal amount of the pigment extender, calcium sulfate. This pigment is manufactured by heating ferrous sulfate with quicklime in a furnace. Venetian red is a permanent and inert pigment, particularly on wood. The calcium sulfate content, which furnishes corrosion-stimulating sulfate ions, disqualifies this pigment for use on iron.

The solvents, dilute hydrochloric acid, and ethyl silicate are mixed and stirred and the temperature rises an upper limit of 25-30 C is often recommended. The second component of the two-pack paint is the pigment-extender mixture. The binder can be used after 1 - 3 d the storage stability is limited and is generally specified by the manufacturer. In the above example it is ca. one year.
