Transparent white pigments (extenders) commonly used in inks, in order of decreasing transparency, ate alumina hydrate, magnesium carbonate, calcium carbonate, blanc fixe (precipitated barium sulfate), talc, and clay. Extenders ate sometimes used to reduce the color strength and change the theology of inks. [Pg.248]

Barium sulfate [7727-43-7] BaSO, occurs as colorless rhombic crystals, mp 1580 °C (dec) sp gr 4.50 solubihty 0.000285 g/100 g H2O at 30°C and 0.00118 at 100°C. It is soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid, forming an acid sulfate dilution with water reprecipitates barium sulfate. Precipitated BaSO is known as blanc fixe, prepared from the reaction of aqueous solutions of barium sulfide and sodium sulfate. [Pg.482]

Because of its extreme insolubiUty, barium sulfate is not toxic the usual antidote for poisonous barium compounds is to convert them to barium sulfate by administering sodium or magnesium sulfate. In medicine, barium sulfate is widely used as an x-ray contrast medium (see Imaging TECHNOLOGY X-RAY technology). It is also used in photographic papers, filler for plastics, and in concrete as a radiation shield. Commercially, barium sulfate is sold both as natural barite ore and as a precipitated product. Blanc fixe is also used in making white sidewall mbber tires or in other mbber appHcations. [Pg.482]

Lakes. Lakes are a special kind of color additive prepared by precipitating a soluble dye onto an approved iasoluble base or substratum. In the case of D C and Ext. D C lakes, this substratum may be alumina, blanc fixe, gloss white, clay, titanium dioxide, 2iac oxide, talc, rosia, aluminum ben2oate, calcium carbonate, or any combination of two or more of these materials. Currentiy, alumina is the only substratum approved for manufactuting FD C lakes. [Pg.444]

Precipitated BaS04 is often used in many industrial applications. Blanc fixe and Lithopone are made by the reactions of barium sulfide with sodium sulfate and zinc sulfate, respectively. [Pg.92]

The BaS04, which is produced as a byproduct, is filtered, washed, dried, and ground. It is a high-quality extender (Blanc fixe) used in the paint industry. [Pg.73]

As has already been stated it is economical to produce hydrogen peroxide by this method only when there is a safe market for the by-product (blanc fixe). As there was an increased demand for hydrogen peroxide but not for barium sulphate, it is not surprising that the above method had to give way to other modern methods. [Pg.388]
