Physician relationships

The physician should fully inform the patient which aspects of the care are related to the research. The refusal of a patient to participate in a study must never interfere with the patient physician relationship. [Pg.726]

In sum, studies covering a number of different therapeutic classes suggest that DTCA encourages patients to seek medical help, but these DTCA efforts do not meaningfully interfere with the patient-physician relationship. In spite of considerable DTCA spending, prescription choice is still determined primarily by physicians, once patients come to visit their offices. [Pg.185]

The correlates of attitudes toward lithium compliance in bipolar patients were studied by Cochran and Gitlin (189). This questionnaire study was part of a larger design looking at factors in lithium prophylaxis. The questionnaire packets were sent to 146 patients, 48 of whom were ultimately included in the analysis. This study evaluated the usefulness of Ajzen and Fishbein s Theory of Reasoned Action to explain the relationships among lithium-related beliefs and attitudes, normative beliefs, behavioral intentions, and self-reported compliance with treatment. According to the model, lithium patients normative beliefs (i.e., beliefs that other relevant people such as family, friends, personal psychiatrist, and lithium experts want the patient to take lithium) predict their subjective norms, which is the expectation that others want them to take lithium. Subsequently, both the subjective norm and the evaluative behavioral attitudes (i.e., positive nature of treatment) were predictive of the patients reported intent to take lithium. This, in turn, was predictive of concurrent self-reported compliance with the medication regimen. These results underscore the importance of the patient-physician relationship in lithium compliance. [Pg.201]

While emphasizing patient care, the general approach used by the CMA policy on Physicians and the Pharmaceutical Industry (CMA 2001) is not inconsistent with that used by the AMA and the ACP. One of the general principles of the CMA policy requires the primary objective of interactions between physicians and industry to be the advancement of health of Canadians rather than the private good of physicians or industry. Another is that relationships with industry are appropriate only insofar as they do not negatively affect the fiduciary nature of the patient-physician relationship. The principles also instruct physicians to resolve any conflict of interest between themselves and their patients resulting from interactions with industry in favor of their patients. They specifically warn physicians to avoid any self-interest in their prescribing and referral practices (CMA 2001). [Pg.59]

The crime of the Nazi physicians was an offense only from the point of view of a nontotalitarian medical ethic. It was to reaffirm the primacy of the patient-physician relationship over the state-physician relationship that the Geneva version of the Hippocratic Oath was formulated shortly after the Nuremberg trials. This oath, adopted by the World Medical Organization, explicitly commands the physician to honor the following principles ... [Pg.219]

The most complex driving forces in the evolution of healthcare delivery are physicians and patients resistance and readiness to accept a "different" way of practicing medicine. On one side the physician, as a patient advocate, is eager to implement various aspects of eHealth however, at the same time, they are reluctant to change beliefs that online services may depersonalize the patient-physician relationship. This coupled with the absence of information usually obtained during clinical evaluation deprives the physician of some important decision-making inputs used in the diagnostic process. There are concerns that if a patient chooses to be consulted by the quickest available physician (online), this will undermine the importance of patient history and will reduce the quality of care. [Pg.336]

Bernoulli and Euler dominated the mechanics of flexible and elastic bodies for many years. They also investigated the flow of fluids. In particular, they wanted to know about the relationship between the speed at which blood flows and its pressure. Bernoulli experimented by puncturing the wall of a pipe with a small, open-ended straw, and noted that as the fluid passed through the tube the height to which the fluid rose up the straw was related to fluid s pressure. Soon physicians all over Europe were measuring patients blood pressure by sticking pointed-ended glass tubes directly into their arteries. (It was not until 1896 that an Italian doctor discovered a less painful method that is still in widespread... [Pg.141]

The current implementation of the UltraLink uses a centralized set of terminologies, concepts, and rules, which may not correspond to the needs of every user. To further increase the flexibility of the expert system, we will implement a personalized version of the UltraLink. This should allow users to personalize the terminology, concepts, relationships, and rules used to identify typed entities and thereby create the UltraLinks best suited for their daily work. This will also enable us to design precustomized UltraLinks specifically tuned for chemists, biologists, and physicians. [Pg.749]

The first recorded studies into the effects of cannabis were carried out by the French physician Moreau in the early 19th century, who was interested in the relationship between the state of cannabis intoxication and the characteristics of mental illness. Moreau and his students recorded their subjective experiences after consuming... [Pg.91]

Eugene Dowdle. You have not mentioned the effects of Medical Aid schemes on physician-physician and physician-patient relationships. One of the keystones of the Oslerian ethic was the sense of collegiality that bound the medical profession and provided, indirectly, a form of peer review that was of benefit to both patients and to medical practitioners. Medical Aid schemes, by their monetarising effects, have done much to damage those professional bonds. [Pg.275]

The defendants motion to dismiss the complaint essentially alleges that the duty to disclose is limited to the doctor-patient relationship and was never meant to govern the researcher-subject relationship. As a consequence, the defendants have asked the court to rule on whether physicians/scientists engaging in genetic research have a duty to disclose their intentions to patent their discovery to those who volunteer to be human subjects. The plaintiffs must get past this motion to dismiss to explain to the court what they mean by the "Tay-Sachs model."... [Pg.197]

The basic unit for weight is grain (gr) and that of volume is minim (m). Unlike the metric units, the amount is expressed in Roman numerals after the apothecaries symbol. For example, V2 grain is expressed as gr ss but not V2 gr. Twenty minims is expressed as m xx. Sometimes physicians also use Arabic numerals in the apothecary system. For example 12 ounces can be written as l XII or 4 ounces as 4 l. Tables 2.4 and 2.5 show the relationships... [Pg.39]
