Photometric studies

The halo globular cluster system also provides valuable information, since accurate distances, and hence reliable ages, can be derived. Mackey Gilmore (2004) recently acquired and compiled a new, nearly complete, internally consistent set of photometric studies of the globular cluster population in both the Milky Way and its satellite galaxies they deduce, from analysis of HB morphol-ogy, age, abundance and structural information, somewhat more relaxed limits...

SimilMly Brand Mid his co-workers [77] inferred from the results of spectro-photometric studies that 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, in a solution of 100% sulphuric acid, was not ionized, and could undergo partial ionization only in veiy concentrated oleum. These investigations are discussed more fully on p. 219. 

Some variants of these techniques have been described by Melville/ Benington, and Bartlett. " The technique described by Melville involves the ability of II atoms and alkyl free radicals to reduce the blue oxide coat on a polished molybdenum surface. By photometrically studying the change in optical color of the surface it was shown possible to make calculations of the relative concentrations of radicals diffusing through a vapor stream to the metal oxide surface. The mathematical calculations are involved, and the difficulties already described for mirror techniques occur here too.

The existence of CO-binding type b cytochromes which behave as a cytochrome oxidase was revealed by Chance et al. as the result of spectro-photometric studies they have been designated as cytochrome o (292-294). This group of cytochromes is distributed in a wide variety of bacteria (292- 13) and also in protozoa (314,315) as well as in algae... 

A flash photometric study of electron transfer involvement of the anion 62 has shown that fission of the S—C bond in THF yields the radical anion 6370,71. 

Most flame photometric studies reveal the presence of a faint background continuum due to radical recombination, and the continuum may be enhanced by additives— the pale lilac colour of the potassium flame test in elementary analysis is due in large measure to the K—OH recombination continuum. V le not strictly a problem in chemical kinetics, it is interesting to survey some of the results obtained from the study of continua. 

Photometric. In photometric studies, one wishes to directly measure the intensity of scattering as a function of angle using a detector, usually a photomultiplier. The type of apparatus used for conventional solution scattering is usually not suitable because its angular resolution is not sufficient and it is not possible to make measurements at angles sufficiently close to the incident beam. 

Enzymes, such as glucoamylase and 3-glucosidase, which differ in their secondary and tertiary stmctures, were adsorbed on SPEB. ° The activity of the enzymes was analyzed in terms of the Michaelis-Menten parameters Km and fecat. This study demonstrated that the activity of the enzymes was preserved despite the dense packing of proteins within the bmsh (Figure 31). Recently, it was shown that ITC is a useful tool to study the activity of immobilized enzymes. This technique allows studies of the enzymatic activity in turbid media, such as in concentrated suspensions of the SPEB. Moreover, ITC does not demand chromophores or fluorophores as photometric assays do. Thus, this method is very versatile because unlabeled substrates can be used. The results from ITC were in agreement with a typical photometric study, and showed that the activity of (1-glucosidase adsorbed on the SPEB is retained. 

Becquerel at least knew about Auer s result. Kriiss, one of the founders of photometry (Szabadvary 1966, p. 343), in a paper published together with Nilson, concluded from their absorption photometric studies that the rare earth elements known up to then include at least twenty as yet unknown elements (Kriiss and Nilson 1887). Bettendorf repeated Auer s experiments in 1890 and by subjecting all mother liquors individually to spectrometry he confirmed the existence of praseodidymium and neodidymium (Bettendorf 1890).

The catalytic activity of some of these polymers for the decomposition of hydrazine (19, 59), isopropanol (19), formic acid (19), hydrogen peroxide (60) and for the oxidation of cumene to its hydroperoxide has been studied (55). 2,5-Dihydroxybenzoquinone selectively precipitates thorium and zirconium in the presence of other rare earths (55). Analysis of beryllium by spectro-photometric studies of its complexes with naphthazarin and/or alkannin has been developed into a rapid, sensitive, and accurate method (134). The synthesis of many of the polymers in Table IX.2 (pp. 274-279) for use as dyes was performed in 1912 (48).

Abstract. I present first results of an infrared photometric study of the young starburst cluster NGC 3603. The in ared color-magnitude and color-color diagrams reveal a predominantly early-type stellar population and about 20 stars with significant IR excess which could be Herbig Ae/Be stars. These stars are distributed randomly in the cluster.
