Dispersion Characteristics The chief characteristics of gas-in-liquid dispersions, like those of hquid-in-gas suspensions, are heterogeneity and instabihty. The composition and structure of an unstable dispersion must be obsei ved in the dynamic situation by looking at the mixture, with or without the aid of optical devices, or by photographing it, preferably in nominal steady state photographs usually are required for quantitative treatment. Stable foams may be examined after the fact of their creation if they are sufficiently robust or if an immobilizing technique such as freezing is employed [Chang et al., Ind. Early diffraction photographs of such DNA fibers taken by Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins in London and interpreted by James Watson and Francis Crick in Cambridge revealed two types of DNA structures A-DNA and B-DNA. The B-DNA form is obtained when DNA is fully hydrated as it is in vivo. A-DNA is obtained under dehydrated nonphysiological conditions. Improvements in the methods for the chemical synthesis of DNA have recently made it possible to study crystals of short DNA molecules of any selected sequence. These studies have essentially confirmed the refined fiber diffraction models for A- and B-DNA and in addition have given details of small structural variations for different DNA sequences. XRD is an excellenr, nondestructive method for identifying phases and characterizing the structural properties of thin films and multilayers. It is inexpensive and easy to implement. The future will see more use of GIXD and depth dependent measurements, since these provide important information and can be carried out on lab-based equipment (rather than requiring synchrotron radiation). A solid emulsion is a suspension of a liquid or solid phase in a solid. For example, opals are solid emulsions formed when partly hydrated silica fills the interstices between close-packed microspheres of silica aggregates. Gelatin desserts are a type of solid emulsion called a gel, which is soft but holds its shape. Photographic emulsions are gels that also contain solid colloidal particles of light-sensitive materials such as silver bromide. Many liquid crystalline arrays can be considered colloids.
