In the hypervalent area of phosphorus chemistry a configurationally stable tris(tetrachlorobenzenediolato) phosphate ion has been synthesised. The growing importance of hydridophosphoranes in coordination chemistry has led to the apprearance of a useful review. The superbase properties of the commercially available proazaphosphatrane has been extended to the catalysis of the silylation of sterically hindered alcohols and phenols. [Pg.382]

Phosphorus chemistry and biochemistry are enormous topics, and obviously this essay touches on only a few aspects of the subject many other aspects are discussed in detail in this volume by others. This introduction to the symposium is built around the commanding importance of electrostatics in the chemistry and biochemistry of phosphates and phosphites, but that emphasis necessitated omitting a discussion of many other topics. Theoretical studies of tetrahedral carbon species have played an important role in the formulation of ALPH and the anomeric effect. Similarly, molecular-orbital calculations have been the touchpaper for development of the stereoelectronic effect in phosphorus chemistry. Numerous investigations of phosphate ester hydrolysis and related reactions continue to be reported. Interest in approaches to easier detoxification of insecticides continues. A number of new and improved stereoselective synthetic procedures have been elaborated. The importance of enantioselective and dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformations is illustrated in many publications. [Pg.298]
