Fats and oils are treated as commodities in the open market and are purchased in bulk. As commodities, their prices fluctuate with supply and demand. Furthermore, fats and oils come in different grades that reflect different levels of processing and have industry-standardized specifications such as the American Fats and Oil Association. In the manufacture of soap in the United States, the source of animal fats is domestic whereas the vegetable oils are frequently obtained from Southeast Asia, primarily Malaysia and the Philippines. 

Arnold M. Guloy was born in Manila, in the Philippines. After graduation from Manila Science High School, he studied chemistry and received his BS degree at the University of the Philippines, Quezon City. He received his Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Iowa State University under the supervision of Professor John D. Corbett in 1992. After an IBM Postdoctoral fellowship at the IBM Research Center at York-town Heights, he joined the faculty at the University of Houston in 1994, where he is currently an Associate Professor. Despite many setbacks, the two sides signed a substantial Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) on 9 December 2002, which did finally curb the violence. Soldiers from two Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) partners, the Philippines and Thailand, joined the GAM and TNI monitoring teams to investigate breaches of the peace by either side (Reid 2005 352-3) (see figure 5.1). 

Dysidea sp. from Bararin Island in the Philippines, has yielded the dysideaprolines A-F (341-346), proline-derived analogues of dysidenin (318). The barbaleucamides A (347) and B (348), which are structural analogues of the cyanobacterial metabolite barbamide, were also isolated. The structures were elucidated by NMR spectroscopic analysis. It is most probable that all of these compounds are derived from a symbiotic cyanobacterium found in close association with the Dysidea sp. [306].

A marine sponge Dysidea sp., collected at Bararin Island, Philippines, produced a further eight polychlorinated secondary metabolites, termed dysideaprolines A-F 319-324 and barbaleucamides A 325 and B 326 <2001JNP1133>. Another two polychlorinated metabolites 327 and 328 have been isolated from the sponge Dysidea herbacea sp. 1524 collected from Lizard Island <2001T4603>. It is most probable that these compounds are actually derived from a symbiotic cyanobacterium found in close association with the Dysidea sp.
