Male sand flies release this sex pheromone to attract females for mating. The males attractant is more potent when mingled with odors from a host that can furnish a blood meal, so that a male sand fly is a more efficient lure for females when he is on an appropriate host. This host attractant in humans is some component of skin odor, but its chemical nature is still obscure. Experiments with human volunteers have revealed that individuals have widely differing levels of attraction for sand flies and that a single individual s attractiveness fluctuates over time. Male sand flies respond to these host odors just as females do, even though they do not feed on blood. In this way, flies can meet and mate on a host, and the mated female can proceed to take a blood meal at once in preparation for laying her eggs. [Pg.78]

Almost simultaneously with the identification of 2E, 4 , 6Z- 10 COOMe, a thermally unstable stereoisomer, 2E, 4Z, 6Z- 10 COOMe 118, was found to be a key component of the male-produced sex pheromone of Thyanta pallidovirens> along with the sesquiterpenes (+)-a-curcumene, (-)-P-sesquiphellandrene, and (-)-zingiberene 119 [10,25]. 2E, 4Z, 6Z-10 COOMe was an essential component of the attractive blend, whereas any one, any two, or all three of the sesquiterpene components were equally effective as the other portion of the blend. None of the components were active alone. Pheromone blends attracted only females in both laboratory and field bioassays [10]. The same compounds are also produced by the congener T. custator [10] and other Thyanta spp. (J.G. Millar, unpublished data). [Pg.76]

It was initially thought that, in insects, the major component in a pheromone blend attracted from the longest distance, while the minor components came into play at shorter distances from an odor source such as a calling female. However, the male Oriental fruit moth, GraphoUta molesta, at least, responds from longer distances (100 m) more to the full female pheromone blend of three compounds than to the major component (Linn et ah, 1987). Male red-bellied newts, Cynops pyrrhogaster (Salamandridae), attract females with a pheromone that is released into the water from epithelial cells of the abdominal gland of the cloaca. A decapeptide called sodefrin (Ser-Ile-Pro-Ser-Lys-Asp-Ala-Leu-Leu-Lys) is the first amphibian pheromone with female-attracting properties ever chemically identified (Kikuyama etal., 1995). It is interesting to note that these compounds attract mainly the males of the respective species. Therefore, these compounds might be pheromone mimics. Females of the desert spider Agenelopsis aperta emit a volatile pheromone that attracts conspecihc males (Riechert and Singer, 1995). This pheromone was identified as 8-methyl-2-nonanone (1 Fig. 4.1), a previously unknown arthropod semio-chemical. It was found by headspace analysis and abdominal washings of females 2 weeks after their hnal molt, when they become sexually receptive it was absent in females of other age classes. The pheromone attracted males in a three-choice arena system at doses as low as 500 ng (Papke et al., 2001). Another female-specific ketone, 6-methyl-3-heptanone (2), was not attractive. Very low doses of 1 (10-9 mg/ml applied to a hlter paper placed in empty juvenile female webs) also induced courtship behavior in males (Papke et al., 2001). The normal behavioral sequence was followed, except for phases which required input from the female. The ED50 value (mean effective dose) of 1 was 5.5x 10-4 mg/ml hexane.
