The bark of Phellodendron amurense (Rutaceae) is known as an important Japanese medicine for stomach and intestinal diseases. The bark is yellowish in color and contains two major alkaloids, berberine and palmatine. Yellow alkaloids do not usually have distinguishing characteristics in tissues when observed microscopically. The bark was soaked in 5% nitric acid solution for 3 days and sectioned for microscopical studies (1). The alkaloids were crystallized as nitrate salts in the phloem, medullary rays, and cortex. Crystals were removed by... [Pg.190]

Sophora falvescens (Ku shen) contains a variety of matrine alkaloids, such as aloperine, cytosine, lehman-nine, matrine, oxymartine, oxysophocarpine, sophocar-pine, sophoramine, and sophoridine, the flavonoid kushenol, and the saponin sophoraflavoside. Ku shen is a Chinese herbal remedy made from the root of S. falvescens. And Qing luo yin, a Chinese herbal remedy for rheumatoid arthritis, is a combination of extracts of Dioscorea hypoglauca, Phellodendron amurense, Sinomenium acutum, and S. flavescens. [Pg.1315]

Phellodendrine is a quaternary base isolated from Phellodendron amurense Rupr. (66), and other Phellodendron species (see Table I) as its iodide, C20H24O4NI (mp 258°-258.5° dec. [a]j) — 132°). ItsUV-spectrum showed a single maximum at 288 mp. (log 3.85). The oxygen functions were accounted for in two methoxyls and two phenolic hydroxyl groups. [Pg.85]

The methanol extract of the bark of Phellodendron amurense was shown to possess strong antifeedant activity against the paper/wood termite pest Reticulitermes speralus. Partitioning and chromatography of the extract afforded four active antifeedant compounds, one of which was berberine [215],... [Pg.128]

Also, berberine is isolated as a main alkaloid of the Rutaceae plant, Phellodendron amurense, and the same alkaloid is also isolated from the Ranunculaceae plant, Coptisjaponica.A classification, such as a Rutaceae or Ranunculaceae alkaloid is therefore not possible for berberine. [Pg.7]

Phellodendron amurense is a deciduous tree that grows wild in Japan, Korea, and the northern areas of China, and often grows to be 25 m high and 1 m in diameter. [Pg.40]
