The single dose of a drug is mo.stly derived from experience it is only possible in a very few cases to calculate it from the activity of the constituents. However, as many herbal drugs arc only weakly active and contain non-toxic substances, i.e, the therapeutic index is large, exceeding the dose is usually only of minor significance nevertheless, the pharmacist must know what the exceptions are in this book, the sections on Side effects and Making the tea draw particular attention to such cases, c.g. arnica flowers, liquorice root, etc. 

International Pharmaceutical Abstracts. International Pharmaceutical Abstracts [104], published semimonthly, is an abstracting/indexing publication which covers all pharmaceutical literature. IPA covers approximately 700 worldwide pharmaceutical, medical, herbal, cosmetics, and health-related publications. IPA features all abstracts from American Society of Health-System Pharmacist s Annual, Midyear Clinical, and Home, Hospice, and Long-Term Care Meetings, coverage of state pharmacy journals, and American Pharmaceutical Association and American College of Clinical Pharmacy meeting abstracts. IPA indicates articles that offer CE credit. IPA is commercially available in several formats. 

Because nearly 70% of patients who use alternative therapies do not inform their health-care providers about these products, pharmacists and other health-care professionals should question all patients about their use of alternative therapies. Health-care professionals should remain vigilant for potential interactions between alternative therapies and prescription medications, especially medications with a narrow therapeutic index, and should report suspected interactions to the FDA...

Enteral feed reduces phenytoin absorption by 75%. The pharmacist can recommend the phenytoin to be given as a single dose, if possible. The enteral feeds should be stopped 2 hours prior to and for 2 hours after the dose. The NG tube should be flushed with 20-50 mL of sterile water before feeds and medication. Phenytoin levels must be monitored as this drug has a narrow therapeutic index.

International Pharmaceutical Abstracts, available electronically from 1970, from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, may only index around 800 journal titles but, as its name suggests, it specializes in pharmacy literature from around the world. A study by Bonnie Snow found that 12% of IPA s journals were not covered by MEDLINE, EMBASE, BIOSIS Previews, or Chemical Abstracts. IPA has also indexed ASHP meetings since 1988, meetings of the American Association of College Pharmacists and the American Pharmacy Association. All records have abstracts.

The Association of British Pharmaceutical Industry (London), publishes a Directory of Members, while the British and Overseas Pharmacist s Year Book (London, British and Colonial Druggist Ltd.) provides an alphabetical list of manufacturers and gives information on schools of pharmacy in many countries and institutions. The Chemist and Druggist Diary and Yearbook (Morgan) lists pharmaceutical suppliers, has a trade names index and also provides information on societies and institutions. The Pharmaceutical Society publishes annually an Index of New Products which gives the names and addresses of manufacturers with some technical information, while similar data with a list of trade names is given in the London Medical Handbook (British and Colonial Druggist Ltd.). Manufacturers are also listed alphabetically in the Proprietary Articles Trade Association Yearbook, and in the Retail Chemist Trade Price List of Proprietary Articles (London, Drury Press) which contains a list of trade names. British Chemical Plant (British Chemical Plant Manufacturers Association) lists its members.
