Pharmaceutical research objective

A challenging task in material science as well as in pharmaceutical research is to custom tailor a compound s properties. George S. Hammond stated that the most fundamental and lasting objective of synthesis is not production of new compounds, but production of properties (Norris Award Lecture, 1968). The molecular structure of an organic or inorganic compound determines its properties. Nevertheless, methods for the direct prediction of a compound s properties based on its molecular structure are usually not available (Figure 8-1). Therefore, the establishment of Quantitative Structure-Property Relationships (QSPRs) and Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships (QSARs) uses an indirect approach in order to tackle this problem. In the first step, numerical descriptors encoding information about the molecular structure are calculated for a set of compounds. Secondly, statistical and artificial neural network models are used to predict the property or activity of interest based on these descriptors or a suitable subset. 

The pharmacist should initiate, participate in, and support medical and pharmaceutical research appropriate to the goals, objectives, and resources of the specific hospital. 

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturing Affiliates (PhRMAG) was founded in 1999, and is based in Dubai (UAE). Its objective is to represent the pharmaceutical industry in dialogue with governments in healthcare issues and to communicate the value of innovation and research. Its membership is mainly the Middle East affiliates of European and American pharmaceutical companies that are active in the five Gulf States (Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE and Oman). 

International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH) The ICH was formed to provide an opportunity for tripartite harmonization initiatives to be developed with input from both regulatory and industry representatives. The ICH is sponsored by the European Commission, the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industry Associations, the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Japanese Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. The objective of the ICH is to harmonize the technical requirements for the registration of pharmaceutical products in the European Union, Japan, and the United States. 

According to the WHO (World Health Organisation), there are around 30,000 known diseases worldwide. While approximately one-third of these are amenable to medical treatment, the objective of pharmaceutical research is to increase this proportion. Prevention and treatment of illness by medication often proves more cost-effective than admission to a hospital or spa. For numerous widespread serious illnesses like cancer, rheumatism, viral diseases and psychosis, however, a convincing therapeutic concept is stiU in demand. 

The objective of pharmaceutical research is to continuously improve drags, so comparison with drags already in use is a very important aspect of the research... 

Areas of Continued Research. Research continues in many academic and pharmaceutical laboratories throughout the wodd with the objective of improving oral contraceptives and better understanding their pharmacological and clinical actions. 

It is earnestly beheved that towards the beginning of the new century (2001 AD), keeping in view the tremendous global technological competition, one is left with no other choice than to internationalize research and development of pharmaceutical drugs to achieve the common objective better drugs for a better world .
