Phacelia

Left to right) Green manures Alfalfa winter rye clover phacelia, which if allowed to flower Isa magnet for beneficial insects. [Pg.51]

Plants with tubular flowers, even tiny ones bunched into heads, as on this phacelia nectar-feeders with long tongues will seek them out. [Pg.95]

Many hardy annuals, such as calendula (pot marigold), Phacelia tanacetifolia, and the poached-egg plant Limnanthes douglosii), will self-seed, reappearing year after year. Self-sown plants tend to be much sturdier, and flower earlier, than those you sow yourself. Unwanted seedlings can simply be hoed off, or transplanted to a more appropriate site. [Pg.197]

There is a single report of the presence of alkaloids in Phacelia hut tests on three species of the genus have been reported as alkaloid free. [Pg.107]

Peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) honey is produced from the nectar of the aromatic flowers of an essential-oil plant, which is widely cultivated in the Soviet Union. Phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia Benth.) honey is light green or white and has a delicate aroma and tine, pleasant flavor. [Pg.402]

After strawberries no other crops should be grown for at least 3-4 years or, if there has been infection with red root rot (Phytophthora fragariae), at least 15 years. To allow sufficient time for careful preparation of the bed where the strawberries are to be planted, the previous crop should be removed 4-6 weeks before planting. Suitable previous crops are 1-year artificial meadows, oil radish, rapeseed, mustard, buckwheat, winter cereals or vegetables (except Fabaceae). Previous crops that are unsuitable are natural meadows which have been turned over less than 3 years ago (because of weeds, white grubs, wireworms and nematodes), potatoes and tomatoes (because of Rhizoctonia and Verticillium sp.), phacelia (because of rhizome rot) and weed-infested crops. [Pg.70]

Do not grow after phacelia or papilionaceous plants [Fabaceae]. [Pg.203]

Recently, geranylgeranylhydroquinone (22.6) and a mixture of fatty acid esters 22.7 have been isolated from L. lignyotus (23). Clearly, these phenols are biogenetically related to flavidulols A-C and to compound 22.1. Compound 22.6 could also be obtained by hydrolysis of the esters 22.7. The acids esterified in 22.7 were identified by GC-MS analysis of the mixture of methyl esters obtained by transesterification (23). Interestingly, the free hydroquinone 22.6 has previously been isolated from the sponge ireinia muscarum (123) and from plants of the genus Phacelia (124). [Pg.186]

Grow green manures These are fast-growing plants, such as clover Trifolium spp) and Phacelia tanacetifolia, that protect bare soil, especially over winter on a vegetable plot, and can be dug in to improve its structure and fertility before planting. [Pg.198]

The actual explanation was given as a result of marty years of research. The pH of 4-6 in the vacuoles of plants would be consistent with the colorless pseudobase form of anthocyanins or a little bit of the violet anl drobase. This pseudobase, on the other hand, is understood to be rare in Nature. In addition to pH, the interactions of anthocyanins with each other, other polyphenol type pigments (such as flavonoids or flavons), and metal ions such as alirminum, gallium and iron(in) collectively determine the color. Desert bluebells Phacelia campanularia) are true to their name as their flowers are blue, which is caused by aggregation between phacelianin molecules and their interaction with aluminum(III) and iron(III) ions. [Pg.306]

Geranylhydroquinone (39) (Fig. 19.14), a compound responsible for photodermatitis from Phacelia crenulata, appears to be derived in a similar manner (Rodriguez, 1983). [Pg.336]
