Personal qualities

An offer to work in chemical research within the pharmaceutical industry rewards one or more successful, day-long interviews in a single company. All your conversations there must evince many avidly sought personal qualities and do so to interviewers of disparate backgrormds and even of different cultures. 

Foremost among the traits crucial to pharmaceutical company researchers are enUmsiasm, indtistriousness, a sense of urgency, and cooperativeness. 

Veteran recruiters expect enthusiasm from young chemists, so they are hardly surprised by it. A lack of enthusiasm is conspicuous, while a knowledgeable interest in a particular job opening is distinctive in an applicant and encouraging to a recruiter. 

Industriousness is an obvious but essential virtue. It concerns every recruiter who, as a fellow scientist, might supervise your work. Your productivity affects not only your own career but his as well. So, no one receives an offer who does not persuade an interviewer that he is a hard worker who can sustain his output.

Attributes are types of personal qualities. Contrary to common wisdom, however, they are not genetically destined to remain at a certain level. Like skills and abilities, attributes can be developed.

For any chemist pursuing a career in the pharmaceutical industry, renewable enthusiasm is a desirable personal quality, especially in discovery research. 

Other important personal qualities are reliability, flexibility, initiative, and objectivity. A reliable coworker does the task he promises to do and completes it on time. Flexibility inspires researchers to learn and practice new technical developments, abandon inefficient working habits, and forsake failed projects. Every boss looks for an employee who begins a task on his own and calls for any needed help initiative like this is the source of the autonomy that comes with job experience. To adopt an objective viewpoint, it can help to ask what a knowledgeable outsider might think, for example, of one s progress or regress in realizing an unexpectedly difficult synthesis. 

Personal error. This is another type of constant error which depends on the personal qualities of the observer. Thus the differences in the judgments of the astronomers at the Greenwich Observatory as to the observed time of transit of a star and the assumed instant of its actual occurrence, are said to vary from to of a second, and to remain fairly constant for the same observer. Some persistently read the burette a little high, others a little low. Vernier readings, analyses based on colorimetric tests (such as Nessler s ammonia process), etc., may be affected by personal errors.

The possibilities for good storytelling are endless. The trick is to know your experiences, skills, and personal qualities so well that you can adapt them to almost any question or questioning style. 

It should come as a relief to answer this question. After giving so much consideration to your accomplishments and the things of which you re most proud, you should have no trouble talking about the personal qualities you admire most about yourself. One approach is to focus on work strengths, such as organizational skills, ability to work in teams, or problem solving. Or, you might talk about traits such as tenacity, maturity, or patience. If you re particularly proud of your ability to communicate well or think creatively, weave these characteristics into the stories you tell about yourself.
