He was born in Macon, Ga., on May 4, 1906, and received his B.S. in chemistry in 1928 and his Ph.D. in physiological chemistry in 1931 at Yale. While at Yale he received research inspiration, which never left him throughout life, from Professor L. B. Mendel, to whose memory Block remained fiercely loyal. Block was a friend to his friends. While he acknowledged his enemies, he ignored them, not permitting them to affect his way of life or his convictions. With the discovery of the crowns and related species, it was inevitable that a search would begin for simpler and simpler relatives which might be useful in similar applications. Perhaps these compounds would be easier and more economical to prepare and ultimately, of course, better in one respect or another than the molecules which inspired the research. In particular, the collateral developments of crown ether chemistry and phase transfer catalysis fostered an interest in utilizing the readily available polyethylene glycol mono- or dimethyl ethers as catalysts for such reactions. Although there is considerable literature in this area, much of it relates to the use of simple polyethylene glycols in phase transfer processes. Medicinal chemistry has frequently drawn inspiration and important new leads from the examination of natural products, and this was proven to be the case once more. In 1992, researchers at Merck and Glaxo announced, almost simultaneously, the independent discovery of the same new class of natural products from two different fungi. Stacey started research in an inspiring and stimulating atmosphere that he strove to maintain, add to, and develop when it became his turn to lead the department. His earliest research was with Haworth and his key partner E. L. Hirst [Adv. Carbohydr. Chem. Biochem., 35 (1978) 1 -29] on aspects of the chemistry of glucoheptose. His first publication with them in 1931 was entitled Walden Inversion in the a-Glucoheptose Series, followed in the next year by a report on the methylation of monocarboxylic acids derived from aldoses and the structure of pentamethyl a-gluco-heptonolactone. He found this to be a difficult project because, initially, he could not crystallize his stock of glucoheptose. Then, as later, he found crystallization to be a challenging problem. [Pg.5]

This chapter has taken the reader through a number of microwave-assisted methodologies to prepare and further functionalize 2-pyridone containing heterocycles. A survey of inter-, intramolecular-, and pericyclic reactions together with electrophilic, nucleophilic and transition metal mediated methodologies has been exemplified. Still, a number of methods remain to be advanced into microwave-assisted organic synthesis and we hope that the smorgasbord of reactions presented in this chapter will inspire to more successful research in this area. [Pg.27]
