For the controlled polymerisation of siloxanes only a few publications have appeared but these constitute a couple of steps forward in the elucidation of methods to find conditions where controlled polymerisation can be performed. Block copolymers of S and D3 were obtained with close to 100% conversion of D3 under /Bz,THF/sBuLi/-20 °C//TMCS/ conditions (M = 49 kg/mol Mw/Mn = 1.03 with 68% S in the PS-PDMS) [73]. Block copolymers of D3 and diene monomers were obtained with close to 100% conversion under /CHX/sBuLi/0°C/HMPA/TMCS/ conditions (6 < M /(kg/mol) < 17 1.07 < mjm < 1.14) [74]. In the preparation of block copolymers containing siloxanes it is a known problem that the crossover from the very reactive carbanion species to siloxane monomers is actually quite slow under apolar conditions. A possible solution to this problem has been found. Di- and triblock copolymers of PDMS and PS or PaMS were obtained by low-temperature polar polymerisation of S or aMS followed by reaction with EDS. The resulting Li silanolate polymerised D3 in THF at 25 °C. Termination with TMCS or DMDCS yields diblock or triblock copolymers, respectively. BackTitrations. In the performance of aback titration, a known, but excess quantity of EDTA or other chelon is added, the pH is now properly adjusted, and the excess of the chelon is titrated with a suitable standard metal salt solution. Back titration procedures are especially useful when the metal ion to be determined cannot be kept in solution under the titration conditions or where the reaction of the metal ion with the chelon occurs too slowly to permit a direct titration, as in the titration of chromium(III) with EDTA. Back titration procedures sometimes permit a metal ion to be determined by the use of a metal indicator that is blocked by that ion in a direct titration. Eor example, nickel, cobalt, or aluminum form such stable complexes with Eriochrome Black T that the direct titration would fail. However, if an excess of EDTA is added before the indicator, no blocking occurs in the back titration with a magnesium or zinc salt solution. Styrenic block copolymers (SBCs) are also widely used in HMA and PSA appHcations. Most hot melt appHed pressure sensitive adhesives are based on triblock copolymers consisting of SIS or SBS combinations (S = styrene, I = isoprene B = butadiene). Pressure sensitive adhesives typically employ low styrene, high molecular weight SIS polymers while hot melt adhesives usually use higher styrene, lower molecular weight SBCs.
