Pechiney

Another way in which academic chemists keep in touch with industry is through consulting. During the years I consulted at different times for Exxon, Chevron, Cyanamid, ENICHEM (Italy), and Pechiney-Kuhlman (Erance, when a friend, Lucien Sobel, was a research director). I enjoyed these contacts, because they kept me aware of current industrial developments and interests. At the same time, it was also rewarding to be able to suggest to my industrial friends new approaches and directions that on occasion were useful and resulted in practical applications. [Pg.252]

In France, Compagnie Europnene du Zirconium (CEZUS) now owned jointly by Pechiney, Eramatome, and Cogema, uses a separation (14) based on the extractive distillation of zirconium—hafnium tetrachlorides in a molten potassium chloride—aluminum trichloride solvent at atmospheric pressure at 350°C. Eor feed, the impure zirconium—hafnium tetrachlorides from the zircon chlorination are first purified by sublimation. The purified tetrachlorides are again sublimed to vapor feed the distillation column containing the solvent salt. Hafnium tetrachloride is recovered in an enriched overhead fraction which is accumulated and reprocessed to pure hafnium tetrachloride. [Pg.442]

The Weldon-Pechiney process for manufacturing CI2 from HCl involves the use of Mn02 as the oxidizing agent instead of the O2 employed in the Deacon reaction. [Pg.444]

Producers have developed specific cell configurations to optimise electricity consumption, cell capital, and operating costs. Pacific Engineering Corp., Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp., Chedde Pechiney, Cardox Corp., Electrochemie Turgi, American Potash and Chemical, and I. G. Earbenindustrie each has a unique cell design. [Pg.68]

Annual consumption of strontium metal has increased from a few kilograms to several hundred metric tons. The largest single producer worldwide of strontium metal is Timminco Metals, a division of Timminco Ltd. (Toronto, Canada), which commissioned a faciUty in 1987 in Westmeath, Ontario, for production of high purity strontium metal. Other producers of strontium metal include Calstron Corporation (Memphis, Teimessee) and Pechiney ElectrometaHurgie (Erance). [Pg.473]

In the initial thiocyanate-complex Hquid—Hquid extraction process (42,43), the thiocyanate complexes of hafnium and zirconium were extracted with ether from a dilute sulfuric acid solution of zirconium and hafnium to obtain hafnium. This process was modified in 1949—1950 by an Oak Ridge team and is stiH used in the United States. A solution of thiocyanic acid in methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) is used to extract hafnium preferentially from a concentrated zirconium—hafnium oxide chloride solution which also contains thiocyanic acid. The separated metals are recovered by precipitation as basic zirconium sulfate and hydrous hafnium oxide, respectively, and calcined to the oxide (44,45). This process is used by Teledyne Wah Chang Albany Corporation and Western Zirconium Division of Westinghouse, and was used by Carbomndum Metals Company, Reactive Metals Inc., AMAX Specialty Metals, Toyo Zirconium in Japan, and Pechiney Ugine Kuhlmann in France. [Pg.430]

Calcium metal is produced in the United States by Pfizer Inc., Canaan, Coimecticut, and in Canada by Timminco Metals, Toronto, Ontario. In France it is produced by Pechiney ElectrometaHurgie. It is also produced in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the People s RepubHc of China. Both Pfizer and Timminco supply the various grades in a variety of sizes and forms. In addition, Pfizer suppHes an 80% Ca—20% Mg alloy and a steel-clad calcium wire for use in deoxidation of steel and other metals. Timminco and Pfizer both supply ca 75% Ca—25% Al alloy for use in lead alloying. Timminco also suppHes a 70% Mg—30% Ca alloy for use in lead debismuthizing (18), and calcium particulate products, which are purchased by several companies for the manufacture of cored wire for use in the steel industry. [Pg.401]

Other Routes. A unique process that produces vinyl chloride, trichloroethylene, dichloroethane, and trichloroethane simultaneously has been developed by Produits Chemiques Pechiney-Saint-Gobain in France (31). Dichloroethylene is chlorinated directly at low temperature to tetrachloroethane, which is then thermally cracked to give trichloroethylene and hydrochloric acid. The dichloroethylene feed is coproduced with vinyl chloride in a hot chlorination reactor, using chlorine and ethylene as feedstocks. [Pg.24]

Molecular ion mass interferences are not as prevalent for the simpler matrices, as is clear from the mass spectrum obtained for the Pechiney 11630 A1 standard sample by electron-gas SNMSd (Figure 4). For metals like high-purity Al, the use of the quadrupole mass spectrometer can be quite satisfiictory. The dopant elements are present in this standard at the level of several tens of ppm and are quite evident in the mass spectrum. While the detection limit on the order of one ppm is comparable to that obtained from optical techniques, the elemental coverage by SNMS is much more comprehensive. [Pg.578]

Bulk polymerisation processes have been known for many years but until the mid-1960s the only commercial process was one operated by Pechiney-St Gobain in France. This process was a one-stage process and according to one patent example vinyl chloride was polymerised with 0.8%% of its own weight of benzoyl peroxide in a rotating cylinder containing steel balls for 17 hours at 58°C. [Pg.315]
