Mono- and di-esters of ethanediol (ethylene glycol) - especially the stearates - are used in cosmetics such as emulsion shampoos and foam bath products as opacifiers and pearlescent agents. 

The main ingredients of a liquid shampoo are detergents (i.e., surfactants), thickeners, foam stabilizers, foam boosters, perfumes, preservatives, conditioning agents, pearlescing agents, opacifiers, colors, and water. Some of them are multifunctional [4-12]. 

Pearlescent agent in shampoos and liquid hand soaps. It also functions as a bodying agent and emulsion stabilizer in those systems. 

Pearlescing agents for liquid personal care products and household cleaners. 

These products exist in different forms, such as compact powders, which are the most commonly used. They are conditioned in cases with one shade only or a selection of several. The coloured product is apphed with a flexible brush or foam applicator. The raw materials are principally pearlescent agents dispersed in a powder base composed of talc (which give softness and easy ghde), kaolin, titanium dioxide or calcium carbonate. Lipophilic binders are necessary to ensure compacting and the dispersion of pigments. They help to avoid flaking or the formation of dust and give a soft texture. Likewise, volatile sihcones help to avoid the chalky effect owed to powders. 

Cream shadows are another form of eye shadow. These are conditioned emulsions in small-sized tubes or jars. Their consistency is more or less fluid but they must spread easily without leaving chalky deposits in the crease of the lid. They are rich in coloured pigments and pearlescent agents. Some are made resistant to water thanks to silicones.

Opacifiers. Opaque shampoos are produced by incorporating high melting, wax-like, dispersible materials into their preparation. Some of these materials crystallize in such a fashion that they effect a pearlescence in the product. Opacifying agents found in shampoos include the glycol mono- and diesters, higher fatty alcohols such as cetyl and stearyl forms, stearate soaps, and latex copolymer emulsions.
